Japan has some great names as well:

    Urawa Red Diamonds

    Kashima Antlers

And a few other gems. In Japanese baseball, you have the Hiroshima Carp and they've merged quite a few teams in recent years but one of the old teams was the Nippon Ham Fighters.

I was wrong. The Nippon Ham Fighters are still around. They just moved from Tokyo to Sapporo. And the Hiroshima Carp play their home games at...Mazda Zoom-Zoom Stadium.

It's not the furloughing as such, more that a club as rich as Liverpool can afford to pay non-playing staff in full out of its own pocket rather than take advantage of a government handout which is there to support smaller, struggling businesses.

Oh the staff? Aye fair enough. I thought you meant the players...i think they should all be volunteering for a big pay cut right now, personally. I just shelled out another 500 quid season ticket money for games i'll probably never see & its just helicoptering straight into the pockets of millionaires....doesnt seem quite right

Yeah, a few Championship clubs like Leeds are doing the wage deferrals for playing staff, which is good. Not sure what QPR are doing actually, I haven't seen anything from them. Maybe we can get another loan from Dunga.

I was there when it happened. I was in Hounslow and it was low key. I went to the outskirts of Coventry for two days. I had to see Onslow's flat, Hyacinth's house and Elizabeth & Emmit's house. No visible reaction to Thatcher. Then I got to Liverpool and they were still partying in the streets three days later.

That was a crazy trip. There was a huge flood in England. Thatcher died. There were a few riots around. A Newcastle fan punched a horse. Millwall fans rioted against themselves at Wembley. And I saw Everton draw Spurs and Arsenal in London and beat QPR in Liverpool. Oh yeah, a QPR fan stabbed an Everton fan after the match and it was right by where I was walking but I didn't see it.

I finally made it to Newcastle. And I finally saw the Lightning Seeds in concert. Two birds with one stone. Ironically I was supposed to see the Seeds in Gateshead in 2010. I had booked a hotel in Newcastle but nothing else. I found out my Denver Broncos were playing in London in Oct, 2010 & shitcanned the concert plan. So the concert at the Sage in Gateshead was great. I'll definitely see the Lightning Seeds again and if I have a chance to see a show at the Sage again, I will.

After the show I hung around the Sage for a pint. I had dreams of meeting the band that I knew wouldn't really happen but it was a cool vibe in the Sage. Then I walked across a bridge crossing the Tyne back to Newcastle and that was surreal. I hit a great pub there and met some really cool people. That may have been the best pub I've ever been in. It was impressive. The people in there were great. I hit one more pub on the way to the hotel that was more of a trendy pub. The next morning it was all over. I was downstairs for breakfast and they were talking about Arteta and Hudson-Odoi or whatever the fuck his name is having the virus. I knew it was over. Later on that day I arrived in Liverpool to the bad news.

Newcastle'a nice isnt it? A wee bit like edinburgh without all the tourists and posh english people. The hilly riverside bit beneath the bridges is amazing

I was initially going to be there for two nights but I found out a group from EvertonUSA were going to be in Liverpool and I made plans to meet up with them Friday night (this plan went to shit with the COVID-19 news.) So because I was only there for one night and had a concert to see I did zero research about Newcastle. I ended up there for about 20 hrs. It was all good. I wasn't sure I'd be able to walk across to Newcastle but I made my way down some steep steps and ended up right by the river. I was closer to a smaller bridge than the Tyne Bridge so I found my way there. It was a about 9:45 pm or so. Very light traffic. That was a nice walk. And I ended up just seeing the City Centre there. I'll have to find the name of the pub. It was like the inside of a castle.

One of the better pubs ive blundered into was in newcastle too, an old traditional place called the beehive, all tiling and oak and cask ale. But that wasnt what set it apart - we walked in at just past noon and there were all these 50+ year old men raving to techno music. Totally fucking surreal/immense. We'd basically just got off the train stone cold sober so one drink watching old men throw shapes was enough for us but we still talk about that

Here's the pub. Some of the fancier pics are from the restaurant in the back (or front.) I never saw the whole place. There were all kinds of hallways to other rooms. I was talking to people by the bar so I didn't explore the place.

The other pub I hit in Newcastle was also nice (and very big) but full of posers and hipsters. Pints for £5.50. I downed two pints just to strengthen the buzz then walked to my hotel.
