Soon we'll know Promoter: UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich to fight former WBA, IBF boxing champion Michael Nunn
I didn't know he was out of prison, but it seems so long ago he went in. I was never a big fan of Nunn...boring as hell. I got into boxing right after Toney vs Nunn and I never liked either. But, Nunn was from mY area and we don't have many around here. Never like to see a boxer go down for drugs. They put too much on the line.
Well he will have very little chance of prevailing against any top middleweights. But he can go on a barnstorming tour and beat up on a lot of bums. But: no one is gonna bankroll that as no one remembers him and he never was a big deal financially anyway. He'd be best off trying to get a job. According to boxingscene that is a "kickboxing" match which is the end of the road for a fighter ala Roberto Duran, Leon Spinks, James Toney and Ray Mercer. "Requiem For A Middleweight".
I don't think any of us seriously believe an almost 60-year-old Nunn can compete against the top middleweights, Stinger. He wouldn't be able to beat fringe contenders, let alone the top guys. Make no mistake though, a prime Nunn would beat Andrade, Charlo, and an almost 40-year-old Golovkin.
Given Golovkin's putrid resume, it's hard to say. Guys like faded Ouma, Macklin, Stevens, and Geale were nothing like Michael Nunn.
Gennady was one of the best ever at just walking in and beating the holy shit out of someone. And he had one of the best offensive trainers ever in Abel Sanchez. But there is so much more to boxing and being a great fighter than that. Everyone saw how Lost Abel was in the corner of both Canelo fights and also with Gassiev vs Usyk. Sanchez has a habit of jumping out and criticizing people that question his work saying they "Are on the outside". No. Abel Sanchez is on the outside as he never boxed himself and never learned how to develop a fighter all the way around. I don't begrudge the guy for not fighting - Ray Arcel didn't either - but you have to learn the entire art of fighting from all four sides, not just straight in and out and demolishing a motherfucker. Gennady beat up on a lot of tomato cans and first time he fights someone who just didn't let him wade in and kick hiss like Canelo and Jacobs - he began having serious issues.
I never knew that Abel never laced em up. I always just assumed he had at least an amateur career. Going back to young Golovkin against Nunn, I dunno... Golov built a career reputation as a killer, until we found out that he's easier to tame than we wanted to believe. Nunn wasn't a devastating hitter, but he had enough pop to keep Golovkin honest. Maybe that's all it would take. I generally think that prime Nunn was a more special talent than Golovkin ever was. And to think, Stafford once said that Golovkin would beat a prime Hagler. I laughed that off BACK THEN.
