Let's not act like Monzon and Duran fought in different eras. These two guys were in their primes at the exact same time and Duran was considered the P4P #1.
Where's Monzon's wins over Foster, Galindez, and Conteh? Oh yeah, that's right... he wouldn't leave 160. He sure has wins over two WELTERWEIGHT greats though. Both Grffith and Napoles were 5'7. Napoles was really a junior welterweight. "Magnificent" Monzon indeed...
This guy pulled up an image of the Joppy fight. LMAO! Gettin kinda desperate, are we? Duran was 46-years-old when he lost to Joppy. Let's pull up an image of ole Magnificent Monzon at 46. Oh yeah, that's right... he was takin it up the ass in the bing at 46.
I liked watching him. Monzon-Griffith 1 stands as one of my favorite clinics to watch. Just a masterclass. Proves this isn't about Monzon bias.
you chaps can have monzon. i refuse to watch any more of his shitty boring fights. so i honestly cant say how good he was.
One is living a peaceful, happy life as an old man. The other died in a blaze of fire as he deserved for being an abusive, psychopathic murdering piece of shit. I think Duran won at life compared to ole Carlos.
For me, Napoles was Black. I don't know what Latin means? Ethnically latin? Spanish speaking? Of Spanish background? If it's Spanish-speaking then........ Kid Chocolate Monzon Duran Napoles Teofilo Stevenson Guys like Ismael Laguna and Cervantes are close, so close. Basically if you take Black out I would go with Monzon Duran Chavez Sr Arguello Niccolino Loche And if you make it just about Indios then as you were but take Locche out and put JM Marquez in.....it's so hard to see past that 1 punch KO of Pacquaio, steroids or not. I liked Sal Sanchez but you know..........did he get lucky beating a totally green Nelson at short notice? Doesn't say a lot that Nelson was able to drag him so deep. He needed a split decision to get over a very good but basically British guy called Pat Cowdell. And he died young and sort of gets immortalized.
If God himself created a fighter to beat Duran he'd have done no better than Hearns. Duran literally ran into the one fucking guy put together to beat him. Duran didn't have Haglers size/strength or Rays Running/Late rounds stuff to get it done. Hagler was maybe one good punch from finding himself in the same mess. But Hearns broke his hand and his legs were gone soon after from the massage and the fact that Hagler could just about weather the storm and get his own work done. There's no more brutal loss that should count LESS on the resume of a marquee fighter than Durans loss to Hearns. I know guys who have WINS on their record that look worse than Durans loss to Hearns.
Would have been the IDENTICAL result if Monzon faced Foster. Guy was rocked to his boots by Briscoe and Valdez. God forbid what Bob would have done to him.
Did you figure that out all by yourself? No middleweight was ever going to beat Bob Foster - unlike Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore who both lost to middleweights.
But would Monzon get faceplanted in 2 rounds by Hearns? Would he fail to win 2 out of 3 with Ray Leonard? Get beaten up by Vinny Spaz?
Monzon-Hearns is an interesting matchup that isn't discussed enough. I suspect that Monzon would have worn Hearns down for a late KO, but Tommy is a dangerous fight for him given his height, reach, speed, and power. Like I said, Briscoe had Monzon in Queersville with a right hand. Monzon had a damn good chin, but it wasn't Hagler good.
That wa the only round Bennie won clearly in that fight, he only won 2 or 3. I think he would have probably beaten Marvin had Hagler ran into that guy and not the punched out shell of a fighter when that fight did happen when I was in high school. It is easy to run down a fighter when you were not there to see him when he was an active andd dominant champion.
