Underrated Action Fighters...

Who are some other action fighters who aren't always given cresit for their exciting fights?

Jung Koo Chang.

And speaking of Roman Gonzalez, Chang vs Gonzalez would have been the best matchup in the history of 108.

Chang vs Carbajal would have also been great.

 

I dont think roman gonzalez nor carbajal are good examples. THEY are always credited as action fighters

 

Michael Spinks is underrated as an action fighter. most seems to only rebember his fights at HW and the Qawi bore

Chang is a name that's underrated period. Not just as an action fighter.

Prince Charles Williams is an underrated action fighter.

Gamez was quality.

Pintor is historically underrated.

It's a shame that Pintor is only remembered for two things - losing the epic war to Gomez, and killing Johnny Owen.

 

Lupe Pintor is also known for 'retiring' Carlos Zarate after receiving a gift decision.

 

Acelino Freitas was a pretty exciting fighter, but got a lot of bad rap even in his prime. His biggest mistake was trying to become a 'boxer' when he wasn't.

 

Yeah, that is the third thing he's known for - getting an absolute gift over Zarate.

Zarate won by a mile.

 

Alfonso Zamora can be added to the list of underrated action fighters.

Zamora was the classic case of either he gets you, or you get him.

Sung Kil Moon is another guy I'd add.

Everybody's classify him as an action fighter

 

Dorin wasnt that exciting to be honest. the first balby fight was a thriller, and the spadafora fight was really good, but beside them, pretty much all of his other fights were very monotonous

 

I personally feel like Zamora is a little forgotten.

But alright, Sung Kil Moon still qualifies.

 

Alfredo el Salsero Escalera was a pretty exciting fighter up until a certain dude from Nicaragua derailed his career.

 

Yeah, Escalera had an exciting style.

 

Maybe im reading the opening post wrongly, but i think the intent of the thread is to name boxers that are not really considered exciting, even though they had an exciting style

 

I interpreted it as 'fighters who were definitely exciting but are not discussed that often'. If this is the case, Zamora definitely fits

 

Yeah, that is exactly how I understood it too. Also like 'forgotten fighters' who were exciting, but not great, thus not remembered in the experts lists.

Johnny Saxton is primarily remembered for his two title-winning fights (vs. Basilio and Gavilan) that were not only gift decisions, but also terribly dull. However, outside of those fights, he could actually be fairly exciting and was involved in a number of great fights - two battles with Gil Turner, the rematch with Basilio (Ring's FotY), and another with Tony DeMarco, just to name a few.

3-time LW champ Jimmy Carter was (in)famous as a poor box office draw, but he was a big puncher and featured in a number of great fights.

 

Jimmy Carter belongs on an underrated list. He seems forgotten by everybody.

I like watching his beatdown of Art Aragon in their rematch. A damn good overall technician. Not spectacular in any one area, but good in every facet.

His lightweight reign came right before Joe Brown (another highly underrated great) ruled the division, then of course, Carlos Ortiz took over from Brown.

 

Post-Ike Williams and pre-Ortiz is an overlooked and underrated LW era in general.

 

Probably because Ortiz and Williams are both considered top 5-6 all time lightweights, greats like Brown and Carter have fallen off history's radar.

Let me pose a Mythical Matchup.

 

For being a small, pure Boxer, Miguel Canto was surpsingly game, and willing, in exchanges - when they happened, anyway. Not surprising of anyone from the Mexican school. The clip of round 13 - 15, first Betulio bout (which @George Crowcroft kindly linked me), shows Canto holding his feet and slamming uppercuts in at points.

As for an action fighter that is forgotten, I would mention Bobcat Montgomery. That is one hell of an underrated fighter.

Naoto Takahashi is a fighter who was in some truly great wars, especially against Jockygym and Mark Horikoshi. He is remembered in Japan, but is a no name in the west, but that is because he was a national or pacific talent at most.

Rocky Kelly is another who was in some brilliant domestic scraps in the UK. Look him up for punch-athons.
