Back in the early 10s, I wasn’t that big on Sergio like many others were. People would rank him 3rd best P4P behind Floyd & Manny, I thought the gap between 1/2 and 3 is like the gap between Kim/Kourtney Kardashian and Sasquatch Khloe. I may have been a little harsh on Sergio for his unorthodox “leap amateur” style. But I still think Nunn was the better fighter. Nunn was a real waste of talent.
I think that Nunn was really overrated. Had a lot of move, but couldn't seem to put them all together. A bit like a rich man version of Sharmba Mitchell. Still, he should be too good for Martinez
You see Nunn losing to Margarito? Nunn beats the shit out of him. I hate Martinez. He's the Lance Armstrong of boxing.
Come on now. The margarito loss was like ten years before martinez became relevant in boxing. Its as absurd as using the sugar ray seales draw to disparage marvin hagler
Seales was a 6' Olympic Gold Medalist and Hagler soon put things to rights with a 1st round KO. Hagler went 2-0-1 with an Olympic gold medalist. Martinez lost to a guy who was getting outclassed by 140lb champ Cotto before the loaded gloves kicked in.
If we purely stick to the matchup at hand, Martinez's problem here is that Nunn was every bit as athletic as he was (if not more athletic), with the difference being Nunn had actual SKILL - Martinez relied solely on athleticism. Nunn was also taller/rangier, and had a far better chin. Nunn also had a mean streak in him. He was a nastier, tougher fighter than Martinez in general.
Martinez was a box bot. He was a like a Fight Night boxer. Press a button, get a combo. Press a different button......different combo. Dude was getting dropped by guys like Macklin, blown out in a round by GGG. He's not big he's not strong and he doesn't have the acumen to think a way out of the problem. He's in deep from round 1. Nunn beat way better guys and beat them better. He's got a win over Toney if he just boxes smart. Compare that to Martinez 12th round horror show with an utterly uninterested oaf in JC Junior.
Yeah, Martinez's best win was over Pavlik, but it was hardly the Pavlik of 07. The performance looked good at the time, but looking now it hasn't aged well. Nunn's dismantling of Tate HAS aged well. It remains one of the best virtuoso performances of the 80s. I'm not 100% sure Martinez beats Tate. I'm very confident that Martinez DOESN'T beat Kalambay.
I don't know if Martinez even beats Sibson, who lost to Tate, albeit when he, Sibson, was past his very best. Sibson figured out Frankie Lucas pretty well and he did that on short notice versus a very good Southpaw who knew how to hurt him. I just don't like Martinez. I think he was what we call over here a "Flash Harry" who had a bag of tricks and a bit of magic dust.
Who cares that he was an Olympic medalist. This was a pro foght, not an amateur fight. Margarito was a much better pro than Seales, thats not even disputable. Anyway, the point is that using a fight that occured nearly 10 years before a fighter prime is pure biaised nonsense
Shades of Mosley-Forrest I, Stylistically... Just a BAD Matchup for the Shorter, Less Skilled Martinez...Nunn UD's Martinez Convincingly or Stops him Late... REED
