I'm a Bg Tito fan.. Tito had nice boxing, setup shots nice, patient and tight skills. Later in his career he relied on power too much, with Hopkins it was a stupid plan how he boxed and partially due to falling in love with his power. Tito had such a nice tight hook and great right hand.. he hit guys and looked like they were hit with a baseball bat! reminds me of Tommy herns with that long lean build but PUNCHED
He definitely relied too much on his power but it in an odd sort of way it had some upside. Some fighters lose confidence when they land power shots and it doesn't have the desired effect. With Tito if 99 power shots in a row didn't work maybe the 100th would. For example Vernon Forrest seemed kind of spooked with the outright invitation from Mayorga to allow free punches. Trinidad wasn't bothered that free shots didn't knock Mayorga out. He simply just kept looking to land even more bombs invited or otherwise. If Vernon did the same thing it probably would have had a different outcome.
very true. Tito really REALLY believed in his power! I love when he'd drop someone then run up and climb the ropes celebrating LOL
Excellent Fight... Unification, Back When That Wasn't the Norm...Both Undefeated, Ooooozing Latin Pride, Carrying Chips On Their Shoulders...Memorable Pre-Fight Staredown... Comically, Vargas Holds the Phone AFTER Getting Blasted w/a Left Hook, Nearly Gets STOPPED In the Very 1st Round....Regroups (Somehow) and Drops Tito Mid-Rounds, Nice 2-Way Action Until the 12th... Crazy Atmosphere That Could Be Felt From Mandalay Bay to Living Rooms Across America... Trinidad was in the Midst of One of the More IMPRESSIVE Strings of Quality Opponents in the Last 20 Years...DeLa, Reid, Thiam, Vargas, Joppy, BHop...Trinidad MOVED UP to Beat Reid for his Title, Ditto for Joppy... And Had Trinidad Beaten BHop, He FULLY Intended on Challenging Roy Jones @ a Catchweight In His Next Fight!!!...One of the More Genuinely AMBITIOUS Runs You'll Ever See... People Hate the Term "Ruined", But Vargas was Unquestionably NEVER Quite the Same After This Bout... REED
You guys remember Tito-Joppy? I was a huge Tito fan but I remember being kinda nervous as Joppy just looked too big for him. Tito's power was no joke!
Yes. Tito with loaded gloves was indeed effective. Watch Trinidad/Reid. Then watch Trinidad/Wright. You will see what I mean.
I’ve always found some similarities to Chavez-Taylor 1 and Trinidad-Vargas. Both had a undefeated, Latino, heavy-handed, long-time champion (massive stars in their homelands) unifying against a young undefeated champ who was a highly touted amateur. Taylor had Lou Duva in his corner, Vargas earlier had Duva but I forgot why they split. Both were classic fights that ended in 12th round stoppages for the more experienced and powerful champion. Both Taylor and Vargas took a lot of punishment and it took something out of them. I thought the final KD was unnecessary, Vargas was done after the 2nd KD of the 12th and didn’t look like he knew where he was. Taylor had more success after this than Vargas (wins over Aaron Davis and Glenwood Brown), but the punishment was adding up. He took a brutal beating against Chavez, and I always pictured Taylor as someone who took a lot of hits in Philly gym wars. The decline from March 1991 to October 1992 was steep. Nando looked bad against Wilfredo Rivera, getting dropped and hurt early on, hurt by body shots later on, before winning. He looked better against Flores but still not too impressive. Looking back, his performances in losing efforts against Oscar and Mosley (first fight) were pretty good. He also had a serious back injury I believe that limited his movement.
Trinidad beat Vargas a lot easier than Chavez did Taylor. I'm surprised anyone would equate those two fights.
it's kinda silly comparison as Chavez was short and fought totally different as well Vargas is mexican and Taylor is black and TOTALLY different styles as well really that is a dumb ass comparison that I think whoever thinks those fights are the same is probably smoking dope or ate some magic mushrooms
Sooooo, NONE of Erratic's Typewritten Comparisons were Valid BECAUSE 1 Fight Was "Easier" Than the Other???.. REED
Just saying, don't see the parallels. Seemed like a stretch. Obviously he sees something I don't see. Not trying to have a feud. I like Erratic's posts a lot. Just sharing my take on his.
The surroundings were similar, the fate of the brave loser were similar, both fights are held in very high regard. I thought the comparison made sense
Dont really believe the narrative that vargas was ruined after the tito fight. He gave good fights to Mosley and dlh, and i think he always lose to these guys
There was an Appreciable Difference in Vargas' PUNCH RESISTANCE Pre-Trinidad and Post-Trinidad... REED
Was there really??? Guy got.dropped by the first left hook Tito landed. He never had an iron chin. Bar the Rivera fight, he only got dropped by elite fighters who probably always were better than him
Same here. Reid was getting floored left and right by fringe contenders. Sure his confidence took a hit after the Tito fight, but he never was going to have a long career
Yes, There Was... 1st of All, Trinidad Landed a Whipping, Fully Torqued, MONSTER Left Hook to Cause the 1st Knock Down...2nd, That was Also the 1st Knock Down of Vargas' Career... 3rd, Vargas Had Previously Gone HARD Rounds w/Yori Boy Campas (Who Could Punch if NATHAN Else) and Ike Quartey, Who Hurt and Dropped DeLa in Their Fight... Even After the Rivera Fight, Vargas' Punch Resistance was SHAKY in his Very Next Bout, vs. Shibata Flores..No, He Wasn't Dropped, But There was a NEGATIVE Reaction to Virtually Every CLEAN Shot Flores Landed, and Flores WASN'T a Big Banger Either... REED
Haven't Seen Vargas-Ike in Forever, but Don't Recall 'Nando Being "Badly" Hurt...Not Visibly Staggered and Obviously Not Dropped... REED Doesn't Think DeLa-Vargas Happens @ All if NOT for the Trinidad Fight & the Way Vargas Looked vs. Rivera and Flores... REED
Dont rebember the round, but he was stung pretty badly by ike at a point. Maybe sayong je was hurt badly was a bit of a stretch. Still, he didnt suffer a reid like decline. He jad a few good wins after the tito fight and only got koed by the cream of the cream
Some of yall might be shocked to here this, but I haven't watched Trinidad-Vargas since like circa 05 or 06. I'll make it a point to rewatch it in the next week.
Loaded wraps my ass. Styles makes fights. He didn't hurt DLH at all and got a gift in the eyes of many. Wright & Hopkins just followed DLH blueprint and didn't ran in the championship rounds like DLH did which cost him the decision.
