If you're to make a list of fighters who were the hardest punching, the fastest, excellent defensively, great stamina, terrific jab etc. it's mostly also a list of great fighters. Not necessarily all hall of famers, but still top class.

Who are some boxers that were otherwise pretty poor, but had one standout ability that is normally reserved only for the best? (for this thread I think we can eliminate chin as there were a lot of fighters who made a career on the sole ability of maintaining verticality)

I think Shavers is a pretty good one. Not a fan of Malinaggi but i think it would be pretty harsh to rate him as C level.

Antwun Echols was an otherwise shitty fighter with devastating power.

I was thinking of him and maybe Julian Letterlough for power.

Both Khan and Berto were trash outside of having blazing handspeed.

If the fighter himself (not just his attributes) has to be C or D level, I wouldn't put Shavers on here either. For all his faults, he was a perennial contender in a very tough era, earned two title shots, gave Ali a heckuva tough fight, and bombed out a HoFer along with some other standout fighters of the era.

I would say more fitting examples for the thread topic would be Charley "Devil" Green, Frankie DePaula, Joe Alexander, and Darryl Pinckney, who were outright journeymen or even clubfighters with a big punch.

I would say they were both good punchers in addition to having fast hands. Khan also had quick feet and Berto had a good workrate in his prime.

Micky Ward's left hook to the body. A potent weapon every fighter would like to have.

Felix Sturm and the jab, though he too could be ranked as a B-level guy

Sturm had good skill in general.

All that separated him from being elite was big time power.

I think he lacked all-round Flair. Most elites had that little something which made them notable, and something you'd remember. Sturm, while skilled and pretty decent, was quite forgettable IMO.

Yeah, i'm not sure what it was with him but kind of like stuck in an amateur mindset. The skills to be competitive and hang around but not bother doing anything more.

If we're talking power with Echols and Letterlough I'd add Ezra Sellars and Randall Bailey from around that time. Pat Barrett from the earlier nineties, though he had quickish hands too tbf. Wayne Alexander could really bang too but was otherwise poor. Henry Wharton similar.

Listen here, tin ribs, I understand you're new and all but you don't become a 3time champion like Randall Bailey if you're a c or d level talent

Wayne Alexander is a great shout. He was pretty average and had a poor chin to boot, but boy could he hit. I saw him fight Ojay Abrahams (second fight) and the power was very real, he got dropped twice and nearly taken out himself too, basically all the pros and cons were there on display in one fight.

Yeah, Wayne Alexander was a scrub with big power.

I remember him badly hurting Harry Simon before getting pounded.

Yep. Shook him bad, I think he tended to hurt everyone he fought at least once. He took the Simon fight on 5 days notice from what I remember so didn't do too badly, and Simon was a really good fighter.
