alot of new posters here so Im curious to know what is the first fight you all watched live on television, or the first fight you recall watching that made you become a fan of the sport. for me, Holyfield Qawi 1.
Have you really learned this much about the sport in THATTTT short a time span???? Goddamn, that is fucking impressive! I've been a hardcore for maybe 23 years now. Congrats, you have me beat in the span of all but... 4 years.
Think it was lewis golota or hilton ouellet. Saw some matches before but they werent live or only watched a few rounds
Jones-Hill was one of the first live fights that made me say, I'm gonna get really learn about the history of this sport.
Shortly after Jones-Hill I ordered a VHS that had both Leonard-Benitez and Benitez-Duran on it. Then I had another that contained Camacho-Rosario and Sanchez-Gomez. It was really the combination of Leonard-Benitez, Benitez-Duran, and Sanchez-Gomez that got my boxing HISTORY engine running.
My mother started taking me to the fights at the Olympic Auditorium when I was 4 or 5 years old, 1968 or 1969. I remember the atmosphere- to this day I literally quiver with excitement when I go to the fights- but I don't remember the fighters that I saw. The first fight that really impressed me must have been a Little Red Lopez fight because he became the Holy Trinity to me, but the fight that, to this day, sticks in my head was a Turi Pineda fight. What I remember about it was that he looked like a killer, unbeatable. Shortly thereafter it was announced that he would be fighting Lopez. I was 7 and had nightmares about Little Red losing.
Yeah if you squint really hard when the camera pans across the stands, you can see a not-so-old kid who's about eleven with grey hair screaming "GO RED DO US WHO ARE UNFORTUNATE ABOUT THE SCALP PROUD!!!!!!!"
Great era , I wish I was around a decade or 2 earlier to go to all those wars at the grand Olympic. When delahoya started doin fights there in the 2000s I went a couple times. Awesome venue
Wasn't a true knockout. It was a slip that was incorrectly scored as a KD. Then Lopez proceeded to drop Olivares like 5 seconds after. Funny how boxing works - Olivares couldn't handle Lopez, Lopez couldn't handle Chacon, and Chacon couldn't handle Olivares.
Speaking of the grand olympic. I was watching some fight there and this drunk kid was stumbling around and talking shit to an older guy I didn't immediately recognize. The drunk walks away and my friend says, "that kid got lucky he left, dude he was barking at is Mr KO!"
I've seen the fight, bought a tape of it, but back then... I started going to the gym just before my 10th birthday because Chacon beat Lopez. I wanted to learn to fight so I could beat up Bobby Chacon.
I was there one night and they introduced a fighter sitting ringside. For the life of me I can't remember his name, but his girlfriend was hot. Every time she had to leave her seat, 4 security guards would come get her and take her where she needed to go and bring her back. And every time the crowd would go crazy.
I think it was Savarese vs Mount Whitaker. How I became a fan of boxing after warching that garbage still baffle me
Probably Tyson-Berbick although that was possibly not live. Same with Leonard-Hearns 2. The first one I know I definitely watched live was probably Eubank-Watson 1.
I think it was Hamed-Robinson in terms of tv. First fight I actually attended live was Harry Simon v Kevin Lueshing in Crystal Palace. The war that was Wayne Alexander v Ojay Abrahams II was on the undercard.
Very talented fighter, I was a big fan and always wanted him to fight Vargas and Reid back in the day. Shame he turned out to be a scumbag and wasted his talent.
Yeah in retrospect he would have beaten Reid easily, I always favoured him over Vargas but it would have been a great fight
