Wilfredo Gomez Appreciation Thread

So after watching four Gomez fights in a row, here are my thoughts on parts of his game which my mind has been changed on, or I've misremembered.

His movement is much better than I recalled. I always knew he was a good mover, for sure, but I seemed to remember him not being as fluid as I was expecting and that he unnecessarily took massive steps back while he was already out of range. As well as annoying, wasteful bounce on the balls of his feet, which is a habit I hate. Turns out, in all four fights (Zarate, Royal, Tirado & Lopez I) he didn't do the first thing once, and he very rarely did the second for long stretches. His movement was graceful and elegant, with absolutely perfect balance. The only thing I'd have to say about it is that when he was moving to his right he wasn't as fluid as a Kalambay or Roman.

His power was definitely better than I've had in my head. I've never thought he was a bad puncher by any means, but more in a Duran catagory where he whittled people down with heavy hands, delivered with great technique. This isn't true. He could do that, but he could also bring a short left hook out of nowhere and put an ATG on his ass before unloading some of the most vicious combinations seen in a prize ring.

His defence is much, much better than I remembered. Brilliant bob and weave on the way in, and on the back-foot he had some very nice upper-body movement. Combined with his great footwork, sense of distance, and the threat of getting knocked the fuck out, meant hitting him clean was very hard if he didn't want you to.

 

Everything you said in this post is exactly why I said in last week's debate that there isn't a motherfuckin thing in a boxing ring that Inoue does better than Gomez...
