I see Mikey being content to lose in this fight IMO. I hope I'm wrong and he goes all out, but I doubt it. He just wants a check.
Mikey could win this. Some might be underestimating Garcia's chances. Pacquiao doesn't have the strength and size of Spence. And Garcia is more dangerous tgan Thurman imo.
Mikey's only chance is that Pac has significantly slipped from 2 years ago - and that's highly possible, so Mikey does have a chance. But, if Pac is anywhere near the form he had in the Thurman fight, then no, I don't see Mikey winning or even coming close. Mikey Garcia has never been quite as good as hyped, and I've been saying so for years. Quality fighter, but a putrid resume, and I've always gotten the impression that he's missing something. He lacks the fire of a great fighter.
always thought garcia had the style to trouble/defeat pacquiao, but he has been so lazy and inactive the last few years. pacquiao is old as fuck and inactive also, but he continually works out while garcia looks all bloated and puffy
Yeah, that's why I think Mikey is just showing up for a check. Expect him to give the same type of effort that Danny did against Spence.
I don't think it's a terrible fight, Garcia is definitely live if he really wants to win, but it's always bad for the sport when a fighter that simply showed for the paycheck in his last big fight gets another undeserved opportunity. And considering it's amongst Pac's last fights, it's pretty meaningless too.
His win over Salido was impressive. As was his win over Lipinets. But I agree, his resume is pretty shit.
I've always thought Mikey was boxing because it's what his family wanted him to do, not because he had the passion of someone who truly wanted that for himself. Obviously he did to some degree, but I agree that he's lacking somewhere in the fire/flair department. Stylistically, he's pretty good vs Pac, and if Manny has declined considerably - which I think he will have - Mikey can definitely win. I think he'd find home with the cross and force Pac to walk him down, but he doesn't have the athleticism to rely on not stop pivoting any more.
Yeah, Robert is the one who's passionate about the sport it seems. Mikey is the one with the talent, but less passion for the sport.
Mikey is about a 100x the boxer Thurman and Joltin Jeff Horn are. So as long as he doesn't show up fat, I would pick him to out-box Pacquiao.
He's gonna look flabby, rest assured. He plain and simple is not a welterweight. Hell, he's not even a junior welterweight. Mikey is ideally a lightweight.
Nailed It... Similar to Michael Spinks, Mikey Garcia's Never LIKED Boxing...He Aspired to Be in Law Enforcement Growing Up, Not a Fighter, Despite His Fistic Lineage... If Memory Serves, Mikey Didn't Take Boxing SERIOUSLY Until 14 or So, Despite Being Around it from Birth, Literally...w/That Established, You Can See WHY He Forfeited 2 1/2 Years of His Career to Get Out of the Top Rank Contract... As AUDACIOUS as it Seemed for Mikey to Call Out Spence @ the Time, He FOUGHT Like it was a Money Grab, Ultimately...Pac is More BEATABLE for Mikey, But it's Also a Money Grab... Literally, Errol Spence Beat Mikey, Porter, Survived a Life Threatening Accident, Returned and Beat Danny, As Mikey Fought Jessie Vargas Exclusively, in the Same Span... Like Spinks, Mikey's GOOD @ It, But Not PASSIONATE About Boxing... REED
Yep... In Terms of BUILD, Mikey's a Lightweight Version of Larry Holmes or Riddick Bowe...NEVER Looks Ripped; Is What It Is...His Body Looked Even Worse @ '40 and WORSER @ '47... Mikey's Probably the Only SNAC/Victor Conte Fighter to Look DOUGHY in the Ring... REED
I think it's well known garcia never lived and breathed boxing but if he trains seriously for 8 or 10 weeks (less if he kept in better shape) he stands to possibly make a high 7 or Maybe an 8 figure payday afterward with a convincing victory
By fighting an undersized guy who got whitewashed by another champ at that weight? If Tom Brady had gone to the CFL after the Patriots that would be fitting.
Too much inactivity during his prime due to contract disputes and he had no business ever fighting above 140.
Good post bruh, but it's worth noting that there's a difference - Michael Spinks had the FIRE inside of a great fighter. He might not have loved boxing, but it didn't stop him from having the spirit of a great pugilist. Had he lacked that fire, he would have only been a "very good", instead of an ATG. Mikey Garcia doesn't like boxing AND it shows in the ring. He lacks the intangibles of a great fighter.
I think Garcia has been one of the most consistently underappreciated fighters in the sport. He never got nearly the same acclaim as Loma despite beating some of the same opposition (including the only fighter to have beaten Loma at the time) and having a much lengthier unbeaten record. Even having the guts to jump well above his best weight and take on a guy that most WWs were terrified of fighting gets derided as just "a cash out."
Mikey was as high as top 5 P4P on many a list for awhile, I'd say he got enough credit. Personally, I always thought too much credit, given his resume was never murderer's row. Now, having said that, prime Mikey matches up very well against the current guys at 130-135. I think prime Mikey would have half killed Tank Davis at 130. Not sure what to make of a Lopez vs prime Mikey matchup, but Teofimo just seems like a more rare/dynamic talent.
I agree. But his own inactivity is at least partially to blame. Whether sitting out his contract with TR was the right move or not, the fact is he retired in the middle of his prime at a time when there would've been some compelling matchups to make.
Agreed with Double. Mickey has only himself to blame. Just when he was turning into a star, he stopped fighting for a few years, and decided to go up in weight not long after coming back, even though the Lipinets fight clearly showed that he wasn't the same fighter past lightweight
Skillwise Mikey might have been the best in the world at one point. His resume was never great, but he was an excellent fighter at his best IMO. I said back in 2018 that I think he'd beat Loma. I still think he probably does.
Don't disagree, he was really really good, even special, at 135 and below. But he's not nearly the same fighter imo at higher weights
