the fights gamez lost by KO to asian guys around that same time frame were wars also, particularly vs the guy from thailand also it should of course be known that all his split decision losses were robberies!
I thought his fight with Yuh was an excellent performance from Gamez in terms of a result (razor thin decision vs a truly elite guy) but a boring one. Which is the main reason I haven't delved more into him.
His fight against Pichit Sithbanpranchan (one of two fighters named that at the time, I kid you not) is well worth a watch. Great comeback.
Overrated if you consider him a great. Just a quality, crafty fighter who won belts in multiple divisions.
Yeah, I don't think anybody considering Gamez great, bar maybe a few Venezuelans. He was/is pretty much viewed as a good fighter who overachieved with the help of the WBA
Would you guys consider him the worst 3 division world champ? If not, who is? Adrian Broner? Other candidates? Personnally, I'm not too familiar with him but back then, he was seen as such.
4 Division? I have 3 (minimum, jr fly and fly). What's the fourth? And I had forgotten about about Burns, I should have listed him. 15 years ago, Barkley was in contention too. He's undoubtly a step above Broner and Burns but compared to Gamez? What's your take?
ricky burns is a 4 division champ? Holy crap. He beats Broner as the worst one Edit: Nope:, he's ''only'' a three division champ
I remember Kobayashi vs Gamez being a fun fight, but in the end Gamez was knocked cold. Then Kobayashi would go on to lose the belt in another war with Alexander Munoz.
Yeah Barkley is up there (or down there), but still, these two victories over Hearns are absolutely huge
there has only been 16 in the history of the sport. and he's more legit than broner, or weight cheat/juicer arce. look at the chumps broner beat for (vacant) titles.
I thought Broner was a 3 division champ, but you're right, I just looked and I can't believe what I'm seeing, he has won titles in 4 different weight classes... The multiplication of world titles has really led to aberrations.
Two of the titles Gamez won were vacant. And his opposition was no better than Broner’s, honestly. I’ve never thought that highly of Arce, either, but I think he was clearly better than Gamez.
