Top Five Fights of the 2000s

Corrales-Castillo 1 is my #1, followed by Barrera-Morales 1

The rest of the top 5 would be Gatti-Ward 1, Trinidad-Vargas, and I guess Vazquez-Marquez 3?

Vazquez-Marquez 2 is high up there too. There’s others like Ward-Augustus, Toney-Jirov, Cotto-Margarito 1, Pavlik-Taylor 1, Arthur-Gomez, Morales-Pacquiao 1, Cotto-Torres, etc...I’m comfortable with my top 2 picks but not the rest.

 

From memory, I'd probably go with:

1. Corrales-Castillo I
2. Barrera-Morales I
3. Gatti-Ward I
4. Ayala-Tapia I
5. Tito-Vargas

Honorable mentions go to Vazquez-Marquez III, Williams-Martinez I, and Tito-Mayorga.

Morales vs Pac II is up there, great bout with a conclusive ending

 

Biased of course but I think Vitali vs Sanders and Vitali vs Lewis were the two best HW fights of 2000-2009 inclusive and should crack most top 10 lists accordingly. Not top 5 but nunber 1o in a top 10 list, definitely. That they happened 1 year apart is helpful. They were proper slugfests with no shortage of blood and incredibly, when you think of the shots landed, neither man went down. They stood and traded, and not mindlessly.

Lots of runners up here, too. I love Gonzalez-Letterlough, which hasn't been mentioned (although I don't think it would crack top five; definitely top ten).

 

As a fight, Brewster vs Liakovich was probably the best heavyweight bout, but if you consider the significance, then Vitaly vs Lewis

 

Saw it live.

 

For sustained action, Liakhovich-Brewster is the best HW fight of the 21st century.

 

That was one of the first fights that came to mind but that fight happened in 1999.
