Yeah but McLarnin beat the second most amount of hall of famers ever. I don't Warrington is a less than stellar guy. I think he was quite good. I certainly don't buy that he's now a bum after the Lara loss, although I've never bought the idea that Frampton was a bomber either. I thought Warrington was going to win that one.
In hindsight, it says a lot. Most took it as a sign that Warrington was better than he really was, as his last fight seemed to show. MTF
I would also describe Warrington as 'quite good'. But you can't go behind that Lara beating. It put Warrington into a more realistic perspective. And, by extension, Frampton, who lost handily to him. MTF
There have not been many very very good 122-130lb British fighters in recent years. McCullough was class at 118, very good at 122 and a good 126 lbr. Can't think of too many more besides him and Hamed, obviously. Paul Ingle maybe, had a decent run before basically losing his life in there. Scott Harrisson was good for a bit. Alex Arthur and Michael Gomez threatened to impress but had weight issues or in Gomez case, just had ISSUES. Bernard Dunne.......please. The very definition of a managed contrived local affair. All that bullshit about how he was bursting arses out in WildCard gym. Michael Brodie came within a snot of winning a genuine 130lb WBC title against a REAL dangerman, but he was badly outclassed in the rematch. Pat Cowdell obviously but now you are going back into the mists of time.
Can't really disagree with a lot of that. I'd rank Ingle and Brodie as the 'best of the rest' and two who would stand out today, yet as you say, Ingle got horribly beaten down and In Chin Chi did a terrible number on Brodie in that rematch. Not sure there are many around those weights as good as In Chin Chi at the minute, mind. MTF
Who was that Asian fighter who kicked the shit out of Dunne at the height of his hype? Poonsawat or similar? Jesus, that was hilarious. MTF
Duke McKenzie may well be the best lower weight fighter Britain's had in the last 30 years or so. Magri is box office material every time, but I don't think he was great. Not close, either. I thought Burnett had real talent. I was gutted after that back injury retired him.
Bernard Dunne had two primes. His first undefeated Prime, when people didn't think he could ever lose. His second defeated Prime, when people didn't think he would ever lose again. His first prime he lost to Kiko Martinez, dropped 3 times in 1 round. His second prime he lost to Poonsawat, dropped 3 times in 3 round. Full marks for consistency. The week he lost to Martinez, there were tales of Spaniards walking into bookies in Dublin and dropping insane wedge on Dunne to get burst. And this guy is routinely remembered as one of the best boxers in Irish history.
Recent Irish boxing has produced some memorably unintentionally hilarious moments. Like this.....it basically screams.........."What the fuck are we doing here".
I watched Kiko Martinez a few weeks back get jobbed horribly against another of Fast Eddie's overrated, skill-less afleets. This is the same guy who couldn't quite beat a binman about ten years back. MTF
Zelfa Barrett. I haven't seen it so I can't concur, but it's Fast Eddie, so fuck it, I will find him GUILTY, pending review.
Yes- I don't know what happened there but he should have gone to the Olympics much earlier than when he did, and when he did, he lost after points deductions in the first round. Then he did very well in the WSB, turned pro, and dislocated his knee. He's getting on a bit now.
Wasn't a bad robbery in that Kiko won by far and didn't get it, but that it was a close fight with ridiculous cards.
Some fucking bouncers/drill merchants on now. Nice to see guys wearing gloves that say things like "Everlast" on them. Not some shit that says "Carbon Claw" or "POWER BANG" or some such fucking drizzle.
Darke was doing the commentary today on Chelsea vs West Brom and was loving it. I was painting the gate and could hear him "Goal stands! It's Five!!"
I had Martinez up by three. The cards were so bad that Fast Eddie had to do an interview pretending to be outraged when his paid stooges got over-excited and gave his afleet too wide a win. Was terrible. MTF
Nah, have to disagree on this one. There was no possible way you could give Barrett five, never mind seven, rounds. It was a bad robbery, made obvious by the horribly lop-sided cards. MTF
hard to knock herring for being awful to watch after he beatdown frampton. normally Id agree, but he shocked me with the stoppage.
