.......he got hit on the ass by bad luck, or exceptional talent from his opponent, or both.

I remember the Patterson vs Ali fight, second fight, but Patterson definitely lost his footing and Ali pounced. He had just enjoyed some of his best moments of the fight.

For the briefest of moments, Frampton seemed he might just get back into it vs that dude who just KO'd him, he was exerting some pressure and had his man cut..... and then he made an amateur mistake borne of tiredness which was capitalized on.....he tried to lead from too far out and walked onto one.

Danny Williams vs Vitali......Williams had come right back into it, albeit briefly, and he got hit by an unorthodox shot he never saw coming from out of his field of vision and it totally undid all the good work and left him demoralized and hurt.

23:45 mark........is where Patterson stumbles. He had just enjoyed some of his best moments. He had a chance to go the distance and he walks into a massive uppercut as he stumbles into Ali's path and then Ali takes him apart like he hadn't done up to then.

Chad Dawson, who had struggled with Jean Pascal, seemed to have figured him out at the end and was starting to beat him up, until a cut ended the fight and Pascal won on the cards.

    That ought to do it.

I also think Barrera had been getting to Khan and they saw a way out with the cut.

JJ Leija vs Camacho was another one- didn't Camachos people check the cards to see what the scores were before they pulled the plug? It seemed Leija was on the way to a big surprise win when that happened. Thankfully they changed it to No Contest.

Bowe maintained he was getting on top when Fan Man sailed in and gave Holy a minute off. :Jest:

And Torres was doing real good vs Kendall Holt when they clashed heads and suddenly Holt took over.

Margarito - Cotto II is one I was thinking of. Doubt Margs woulda won like others think, but I do think that he was getting stronger before the doctor stoppage.

Jesus I HATED that prick Margarito, Hated him.

Him and that whole Oxnard scene, Little Roberto the Potty Mouth, Fernanda La Comida, etc.

I suppose Vargas might have gotten something out of the first Mosley fight until that swelling really impeded him.

A part of me says that Randy Turpin beats Ray Robinson if Ray doesn't land that long opportunistic right hand in the 10th round. Ray never landed a shot like it in the preceding 25 rounds. It was the one.

I just rewatched him vs Patterson, both fights, he was effortless back then in his punching.

T0ny Lopez against Freddie Pendleton. After hitting the canvas several times early, Lopez looked to be clawing his way back into the fight when a big right hand by Pendleton in the 8th got Tony into trouble and led to a (somewhat questionable IMO) stoppage.

IIRC, in the DeLaHoya-Chavez rematch, Chavez looked like he might have slowed DeLaHoya slightly and opened up an opportunity for himself to rally late when a big left hook by Hoya smashed his face and convinced him to retire on his stool.

In the rematch between Willie Pastrano and Gregorio Peralta, Pastrano got off to an early lead, but Peralta looked like he might be starting to get into the fight when Willie opened up a cut and caused a stoppage.

Joppy had a decent round or two against Trinidad...got his jab going and seemed like he was getting Trinidad's timing down

It tends to be forgotten, but Ali was a rather big hw, especially at that time

Even though it was an epic ass-kicking, Margarito did have a bit of a comeback against Mosley. The 7th round was Margarito's best and in the 8th he was also doing some good work. Then late in the round Mosley caught him with a crisp right and as Margarito's concentration lapsed for a second (he looked away), Mosley nailed him with a left hand haymaker. It was all academical after that.

Also, Merchant's finishing line of "Can that man fight!" was splendid

This is true. It is much for this reason I would pick Lennox over him and give Tyson an excellent chance. Achievement-wise, Ali is the best heavyweight, but head-to-head not, as precious few (if any) athletes of the 60s would be

I remember that. And the HBO crew were laughing at how Joppy was "Wobbling up" to Trinidad. Joppy threw about 100 punches in 1 round to try and turn things in his favour. He'd had a very good opening round when for some reason he just dropped his hands coming out of a move and got nailed. Of course Tito might have had his wraps on that day too, so who knows.

Ali was 6'3", not a giant but biggish for the era. Today, Cleveland Williams would be known as "Undersized Cat".

One fight I do wonder about is the first Ali vs Quarry fight........it is possible that if Quarry doesn't cut that Ali, coming back off the ban, and not up to his 1971 level of fitness and refinement vs Frazier {he thanked Quarry for giving him the fight as he needed top level activity, and ASAP} ........Quarry had winded Ali with a good body shot and Ali was noticeably wincing on his stool. It's unlikely, but possible......Quarry was getting a job done in there.

It's probably the case that Castillo KO's Corralles but for Corralles having barely enough cognitive ability left to spit out his gumshield.

Again not saying much but the first say 2 min and 15 seconds are all Ali, then he slows and begins to load up a bit, miss. Quarry barely touches him first round, and Ali's snap is not there at all in the 2nd, as Quarry gets a lot closer and has more success. Quarry finishes the 2nd round best, slipping the same shots that had been tattooing him in the first round and landing a left hook downstairs.

Definitely, for me, if that cut doesn't open, then Ali is in for a very hard next few rounds.

I guess that makes Frazier the "TOM Cat", said Ali.

"And it makes you the Ali Cat", replied Frazier.

The Merchant line "Can that man fight" popped into my head a few days ago as I was watching Shane on Tyson's podcast.

Shane really got shafted here. 99% of the focus is on Leonard and Hearns. Mike asks Shane ONE question about his fight with Floyd, but other than that, Mosley is ignored the whole time. I felt bad for the guy, but Mosley being the super nice guy that he is defers to Tyson, Leonard, and Hearns the whole interview and just looks happy to be there. Plus, I suspect Shane was high as fuck, as he admits he and Mike had been smoking together.

I think Shane is a pathetic figure, in the nicest sense of the word. Just a saddo. Ripped off by his wife, BALCO, then humiliated by Floyd with a very public demeaning about performance enhancers when Floyd was almost certainly up to something himself....and Canelo, we know about..... Makes me laugh when I hear about this "Owning of Black Bodies"- Jin Mosley and Floyd took the piss out of Shane, badly. Now he says he wasn't even legally married. Needs to get his head and ass connected.

Shane is a bit of a bimbo. Or, more accurately, just a sucker - I don't think he's low IQ, but he's easy for women to use.

Obvious ones but both fights between Alexis Arguello and Alfredo Escalera saw Escalera coming back at Arguello before the fights were stopped.
