The best guy you think pre-slammer Ayala Jr. could have beaten. Obviously, I don't expect anybody to say Leonard, Hearns, Duran, or Benitez. He was due to fight Davey Moore, would he have won that? Also, who's the best guy from the 90-current era that you would take him to beat.
I've never seen Reid, so I won't comment but I think he gets fucked up by Vargas, and has an either-way type war with Moore.
Reid was the weakest link out of that "rushed into ruin" trio. Vargas was the strongest link of the three, and yeah, he probably beats Ayala.
Bout 10-12 years ago there was a poster on ESB who honest to God believed Ayala would have beaten Leonard, Hearns, and Hagler.
It's always the same. People who max out their potential and suffer bad losses at the very highest level at the very end are remembered as ovrachieving bums that would lose to any "Name" champ. People with this great heralded potential that never realized it {Ayala, Ibeabuchi} get remembered as World-Beaters. Ayalas people did say that they were looking for Duran but he ran off and lost to Kirkland Laing instead. That's what they said in Ring Magazine when Ayala was being released from Prison. He quit with a broken hand versus a totally shot- and always limited- YB Campas. He won't beat Duran, he doesn't have the style to do it, he plays right into his hands. He's no better than Sibson and friends- he's a 154lbr in any event. David Reid- sure, I could see that, mainly cos David couldn't see anything after a few rounds. Raul Marquez he beats. Maybe Boudani, or Terry Norris, the sort of guy who wasn't skilled to keep it up for 12 rounds or couldn't take 12 rounds of punishment. Right now I feel Ayala is living off a lot of old colour photos from the late 70's, early 80's. Even the Olympics......he didn't travel to them because of the Boycott., another Gold Medal he definitely would have won with "no problems".
Duran would have fucked Ayala up. He would have taken it personal that Ayala was being touted as the next him, and he would have made it a point to punish Ayala.
See the guy with the sheepish grin and the "Grant" cornerman jacket- he was Ayala's shrink. His name was Brian Raditz. Jewish guy from Pennsylvania. I don't know if he was another Norman Mailer- sort of a phony hanging around with boxers to make himself feel tough. He allegedly had a budding boxing-career of his own and a football career which ended after an accident in 1976. He was on the books at the Redskins at the time. Maybe he hanged around with boxers to live out his own career through them. He was also being lined up-allegedly- for a fight with Mickey Rourke. Now I can't say I know too much about him but when Ayala- who went to prison for a sex crime- got out of prison, Raditz and friends went out to a Strip Joint to celebrate with Tony. Which is just the sort of environment a career perv needs to be in as he tries to go straight. This is the same guy less than 20 years after the above photo was taken.........still living the dream it seems.....EDIT: the guy with the gloves is his son and Raditz had "Prostate Cancer" at the time. but he seems to have gotten some good testimony here:- How I and Others Knew Dr. Brian Raditz - Brick City Boxing
Ayala probably always would fall apart under heavy resistance. A guy like Moore might have been too hittable for Ayala's devastating offense, and Reid was too fragile and too blind. I suppose I could see Ayala just busting up and beating up a guy as hittable as say, Mayorga.
Ayala would do well at 154 at any point in the last 10 years. You have guys like J-Rock and Rosario would have picked up belts. Ayala would have wasted guys like Williams, Rosario, Harrison, Liam Smith, ect.
I'd give Ayala a shot over all the 154 titlists back to the 90's, excluding Trinidad, ODH, Canelo and maybe a few others. Ayala vs. S. Martinez would've been interesting, for example.
I think Martinez would have taken Ayala apart and knocked him out late, but Ayala has an outside puncher's chance. Maybe Ayala has better odds against Paul Williams? You forgot Mosley as a guy to exclude Ayala's chances against. Shane would have wiped his ass with Ayala.
Yeah I was thinking that. Winky and Shane batter Ayala. He'd likely beat Mayorga and Campas. Also, did those two fight eachother? And if they didn't, who on earth is responsible for terrible oversight? Would anyone give Ayala a chance vs Wajima? Norris?
Wajima, yes. He didn't blow me away from the video I've seen of him. Ayala had much better technique and more natural talent, I could see him battering Wajima. Norris? Same deal as Martinez. Ayala has a puncher's chance, but if he doesn't land a big one, Terry chops him up.
I think he could knock Hilton out, but I think he probably gets stopped by Lopez. If Lopez let's his hands go, that is.
Hilton-Ayala is a tough call. Hilton was tougher, but Ayala was a lot more skilled. Both had booming left hooks, but Ayala's was shorter and more compact. But again, maybe that's all canceled out by Hilton having the better chin. I would favor the Lopez who beat Campas to knock both Hilton and Ayala out.
Hilton was a legit 15 round fighter whose win over Drayton impressed me a lot. It's a pity he couldn't keep it going. I think a lot of it comes down to preparation- if Hilton prepares properly and takes it seriously he wins. He also appears to have been tough- he could have quit in the Whittaker fight but he persevered. Didn't Hilton drop Drayton with a right hand?
