Funny thing is, I think it my mind it was Marvin Gaye that told Foreman to fight five dudes in one night, and then Don King ran with it.

Alzado actually had a 40-2 amateur record, so he had more experience than Conor/Paul bros/Askren combined in boxing

Alzado was also juiced to bits, and at 6'3" 260 he was one of the biggest men Ali had ever faced. He had good reach.

Askren last night was a fat dwarf who looked like he'd been pulled off the streets of Portland.

Pulled out of a tent and asked to fight for £40.

And they promote it was the "2008 Olympian, former UFC standout".

    No.

Good post, although I disagree with some of your premises.

Firstly, I don't believe that the level of the sport is a problem as such. If the quality of the fighters were important, Jake Paul wouldn't be more popular than Regis Prograis even now.

Also I don't believe that the quality of the sport is always parallel to its popularity, as I don't believe the sport was at its highest level in 1920-30s, but that's another debate. I believe more in cultural explanations. Boxing, at least for now, has grown old as far as entertainment goes

Well the paydays for that one at least make sense given the massive difference in fan interest.

What aggravates me is the guys fighting soft touches making lets say a million per against essentially no-hopers. A real opponent comes along for a matchup everyone wants to see. They are offered 10 million for that fight. "Nope, for that one i want 20". Even though it would be the highest payday of their career by a wide margin they turn up their nose at it.

The other thing is guys who are never "Ready" for the fight and turn it down.

Ike Quartey I am looking at you.

Prince Naseem made a lot of money in relative terms but imagine him at his pomp now with his style of boxing, persona(lity), and if he had embraced social media....

He may have been "bigger" but his drop-off would have been even more dramatic after getting his ass handed to him. Thousands of people unsubscribing/unfollowing or whatever.

Apparently after Trinidad-Hopkins a whole pile of Tito dick riders never showed up again at S/O and that was a dedicated boxing web site.

That's a start. How about constantly calling him out? Wear a MAGA hat and talk about his "kind" moving to America stealing jobs.

Maybe Oscar will take the fight and try to sell it as "uniting people". :Jest:

Your previous post was pretty good (even though I disagree with it as I want to see boxing promotedas a sport first , not at the individual level, that was the UFC gameplan pre Rousey/McGregor and the sport was so much better) but I'm not too sure about this one though. Considering most major sports have seen their revenue increase in recent year (true mostly because of tv rights), I'd like to see reports (or the study you mentioned) of attendance declining dramatically because of lower tolerance for defeat.

Overall a loss in boxing will always be worse than in other sports, but this is mostly because fighters fight so infrequently and that promoters sells events (and it s easier to do so promoting an undefeated ''superman'', or at least one that hasn't lost in a while) instead of fights than the intrinsic nature of the sport. Not exactly boxing but K1 was thriving a few years ago even though its biggest stars were getting koed left and right

And to be honest, sideshows were also quite common in the Ali era (Foreman vs 5 clowns, Ali vs Inoki). Difference is though, fighters at that time still cared about being the best. Could you imagine Ali or Frazier in a situation like Spene/Crawford or Pac/Floyd (I don't care that they fought as 2 hasbeen) ??

    agREED...

Ali and Frazier were HELL BENT on Facing Each Other...They Both HAD to Know Who the Better Fighter Was...

Sadly, it's Not THAT Important to Most Current Fighters These Days, and Hasn't Been for Quite Some Time...

Inoki hurt Ali's legs badly. Even though it was a farce it was a draining brutal farce.

Jake Paul barely got fucking hit last night.

And I know who I would sooner get hit by......and it's not Inoki.
