Boxing is in a sorry state these days, skills-wise. That's why the casual observers can't distinguish the difference between a real pro fighter and Jake Paul. That's why there is a demand for fighters that fought 30 years ago.
I disagree about the first part. There's actually a lot of young fighters right now who are high-skill - Lopez, Ennis, Ortiz, Benavidez, Navarrete, Stevenson, Haney. That's not even counting established guys right now who are high-skill - Crawford, Inoue, Estrada, Canelo, Spence, ect. Skill isn't the problem, at all. The problem is these guys aren't fighting eachother.
You nailed it. When was the last time we got a fight that hyped us for many weeks? I can’t remember. Compare the current era with what went on between 1996 and 2005 let’s say. So little happens that we’re reduced to comparing fighters from different eras. I really miss these old times. I really hope we’ll experience a boxing revival soon. I don’t like the current turn of events. I can’t believe a novice like Jake Paul gets more press and attention for his boxing « career » than most current champs.
Difference is that in other sports, those events are blips on the radars. In boxing lately, this is what generates the most hype (by far). I other words I don't think anyone is really bothered that these kind of fights (or the YouTube freakshows) are happening, we are bothered that they get so much attention while real quality boxing barely gets any
We've also had an underwhelming performances when the big fights have been made. Few exceptions, like Fury vs Wilder, even then that fight happened by accident, as did the rematch with Joshua and Ruiz.
Competitive fights are happening and there's more opportunities to view fights than ever. The trouble is that, leaving Covid and the Heavies aside, there is mostly not the same money in the current super fights and too many fighters or those who advise them have the same mentality as cautious pension fund investment managers, and so the safety first option is to ensure the risk quotient is firmly in your favour even if it means fighting on average 1.5 times a year
When they fought the first time it was already well into ‘freak show’ territory with both being in their late 30’s and Tyson having fuck all left in his tank. So 20 years later I have no idea what this even is...
