    Leeds is actually the biggest city in Northern England if you go by city population. They've got Manchester beat by 200,000+. But the UK gives Manchester all of Greater Manchester when calling them the biggest city in the north. They do the same with Liverpool and give them towns on the Wirral and other Merseyside towns. Ridiculous. How many people in Bolton & Wigan consider themselves proud Mancunians? How many people in Wallasey call themselves proud Scousers?

    UK politics is a very fraught area, especially when it comes to demographics and geography.

    I remember Bobby Vanzie- former British 135lb champ- saying he had been discriminated against.

    I couldn't understand it- he got title shots, decisions went his way, etc.

    What he really meant was that he was from "The North"- Bradford, and that he didn't get love from the TV Stations who wanted a "Sexier" product.

    Indeed, the airport up there is referred to as "Leeds-Bradford".

    I've further North than Leeds, to YORK, and it's got almost NONE of the shit associated with the North a la social issues etc.

    It's worth nothing that York has one major difference with a lot of the Northern towns and cities- it is not "post-Industrial". I am convinced that the cities Unesco heritage status, old Roman walls, brilliant old architecture, Universities etc, contributes to this.

    In 2018, The Sunday Times deemed York to be its overall 'Best Place to Live' in Britain, highlighting the city's "perfect mix of heritage and hi-tech" and as a "mini-metropolis with cool cafes, destination restaurants, innovative companies – plus the fastest internet in Britain".[55][56] The result was confirmed in a YouGov survey, reported in August 2018, with 92% of respondents saying that they liked the city, more than any of 56 other British cities

    Aye city size is a conceptual minefield...there's really no one definitive way to measure it. I think job market is usually the best one-stop proxy of a citys pull on its hinterland and thus real 'size' but its a hard stat to source. I could bore everyone at length about this...but will refrain:Jest:Except to say.....Manchester is def bigger than Leeds in reality

    I'm certain you two have looked at US demographics. You'll see a huge difference in city size by area in cities/towns in the East & Midwest vs cities/towns in the South & West.

    In the beginning, dealing with Native American tribes, as well as other foreign settlers they marked off just what was needed for this new city.

    Once the settlers got out of that area they took liberties. The whole notion of city planning changed as well. "There's fucking nobody here. Just spread everything out."

    You wouldn't bore me. I am always looking up population statistics, population density, changes in city populations, etc.

    The change was mostly cars, I think....American cities west of ~Pittsburgh/chicago were underdeveloped until after mass car ownership. Distance becomes irrelevant, density becomes an impediment, lets give everyone & their car plenty spasaaaaaaaaaace. Uk postvwar towns are a bit like that, too. Worst invention ever....i wish i could click my heels amd make them all vanish.

    But re: places close to big cities identifying with the city- I think the 'holiday chat' is a good gauge. You're trying to explain to a foreigner on holiday where you live, how do you describe it? Then petty regional sectarianisms kinda disappear and the guy from Wigan...or East kilbride or Wirral ir wherever...just says 'Manchester' or 'Glasgow' or 'liverpool'

    People do that in the US as well. Not everyone but enough. Especily in the military. And the distances are worse in their claims. People claiming cities they live 40 miles from.

    Hell, Manchester and Liverpool would be "twin cities" in the US.

    Its usually estimated - for a lot of official purposes- by 'continuous built up area'. Which is often an improvement on randomly drawn city boundaries but can also cause confusion for various reasons. For instance a random pair of cow fields between settlements can shave half a million off an official city size estimate. Build 300 houses on the cowfield and your estimate of city size jumps 500k.

    It also can combine two or more nearby but relatively indepently functioning cities as it does in the case of Leeds-Bradford without any weight given to their relative polycentricity. And, in effect, does for the whole west midlands/birmimgham. The most extreme example of this is in Germany where the rhine/rhure conurbation of like 4 or 5 distinct, pretty evenly sized cities often gets listed as Europe's third biggest metro region after london or Paris. You go searching for this gargantuan global metropolis the biggest city you'll find will be about the size of newcastle.

    So in reality a city might draw a lot of people in from well beyond its ring of cowfields....or might not draw very many people in despite no cow fields to impede the flow! So I find things like employment & consumer spending which capture human behaviour, movement patterns etc to usually be more telling measures. So, at the extremes again, Birmingham, with a council area of 1.1m, will get listed as a 'metro region' of about 2.7 million due to it being part of such a big built up area - and edinburgh only 500k by both metrics. Yet Edinburgh actually has higher net inward commuter flows than the 1.1m council area of Birmingham. Brum's neighbouring towns are relatively self contained despite their contiguity whereas people commute into Edinburgh from far and wide. And thats very apparent when you're there....its bustling, rich, rammed with stuff, tourists, activity. More so than Brum. If you just looked at the official stats you might leave Edinburgh for Brum & expect to find a city 5x the size.... but you'd be disappointed.

    Edited to include the word 'polycentricity'...feeling like a right clever cunt now

    To mention nothing of the environmental anomalies that are LA and San Francisco. One is a smog trap and the other is a geophysical death trap built smack bang in the centre of a cold foggy bottleneck.

    It's like an East Coast city that was built on the West Coast. Though the attitude has always been the peace and love left wing.

    Also be very careful of what section you visit. Trust me. You do not want to end up in the Tenderloin district. It's like Liberia within America.

    Often when people in U.S. say what city they are from they'll just name the closest well known one as it's simpler than going onto to further explanations. It makes sense. I always wonder though if i were to mail those people a letter what would the actual address be? For example where would their home have to be physically located for their address be "Los Angeles, California". I understand California has a massive population and is much more spread out than most other states but it seems similar in a lot of other places too. Strange to me how so many people don't live in Chicago/Houston/Miami it's so often "just outside of" or "two miles from".

    Scott Carson {yes this is a football thread} starts in goals tonight vs Newcastle United {yes Scott Carson is PLAYING FOR CITY}

    City remain prohibitive favourites but I fancy they might suffer some post-League blues. {ha ha}

    Newcastle after all just battered Lester.

    Gorgeous.

    Irish could sit in there, on his laptop, domineering, enjoying the sunlight, then read a book, stride to the window, glare out it, safe in the knowledge that He, Irish, was right and that all and sundry had some re-thinking to do.

    Irish would then stride, Watson-like, back to his 1856 limited edition roll top desk {see below}, and place a few bets on his brand new laptop, natch he would win, and spend the money on some sort of expensive steak.

    Irish would then head out to the local park where he'd slash and hook all and any oiks who had the temerity to approach his Regal self with his limited edition Victorian gentlemans walking stick, see below.

    Yes. Yes. Yes.

    There's a famous old brewery in San Francisco called Anchor Steam. Their signature beer is a lager that's similar to an ale. They used to put their yeast in trays on the roof of the brewery in the fog at night.

    I am not a big fan of that beer but like the story.

    If you're driving around Los Angeles how easy is it to go to the wrong area for outsiders? I don't necessarily mean right in gangland center but anywhere where a local would never end up by accident.

    When you approach the L.A. area you're entering from a freeway which is going to become a series of freeways as you go. It's as simple as knowing which freeway you need to either stay on or branch off too and knowing your exit. The trickiest part is just to keep watching for the signs that tell you the freeway splits. For example, you're heading down the 5 on a six lane freeway. You need to merge into the left three lanes to continue on the 5. A mile later, you need to be in the right three lanes to continue on the 5. Typically traffic will slow down in certain parts during certain times, so you have to get people to let you in, and most people are doing the same thing.

    Anyone could make a wrong exit in a bad neighborhood. I have made wrong exits but not in gangland. It's generally pretty easy to get back on the freeway.
