This is fucking sad. You have to wonder if the BBC doesn't arrange these things deliberately to take the piss.

You see now what i meant by inverse jingoism.

All the worst elements are extolled.

"our fans are the most racist, our security is the worstest, our players are the most abused, the PM is to blame"

Gary Neville can't even honestly report on what the PM said.

The PM said you're allowed to Boo.

For Neville, this is an exhortation on the PMs behalf to racial hectoring.

I feel sorry for this place. It deserves better than being balkanized to bits by feudal scumfucks desperate for a bit of the action.

My suspicion is that England, as Feebles will state, are systematically derived, whereas Italy are more responsive.

It's why I always felt that some emotional abandon is necessary to win. Sometimes you need to swing and keep swinging.

Why does Harry Kane even have a defensive role?

By all means "defend from the front".......but not at the price of all attacking.

Yeah there's a difference between shirking all defensive responsibilities and asking everyone on the pitch to act like a defender.

I still have to laugh at this. Group stage match and it's quite possibly a red.

Kane's best moves last night were assists. I can't think of a single time he found himself running onto a ball where I was thinking "He's in here, he's onto one here".

His run in the buildup to the Shaw corker and the clipped ball onto the head of John Stones ..........and his general "defensive" harrying come to mind.

That's not what you want your number 9 to be doing, entirely.

It's a short walk from Harry Kane taking corners at Euro 2016 to crossing it to John Stones 5 years later.

That facial expression and the age difference literally makes him look like an old geezer collaring some yoof on his lawn.

PS it wasn't a goal saving foul, either.

I don't know. Hindsight is 20/20 and questionable decisions are usually all but forgotten when a team wins.

I still don't understand the logic behind Kane taking the corners.

What I am saying is there is NO logic in him taking corners- which he was 5 years ago- to crossing the ball last night.

And we all know me and Feebles have excoriated Kane this tournament but I'd sooner see him floating around the 12 yard mark all night doing fuck all than pressed into some stupid harrying-breaker role that is best left to Phillips and Rice.

A striker is literally the only player than can do somebody elses job for 90 minutes and do far less than if he'd done his OWN job badly for 89 minutes and properly for 60 seconds.

Agreed that hindsight is 20/20 but it's not really hindsight to say that you put a round peg in a round hole, etc.

A striker can't do his job if your team dont have the ball, mind.

How things have changed. It seems fake news was always with us but an attempt to get around it and beat it back with reasoned discussion used to also exist.

I distinctly remember in the immediate aftermath of this some fairly inaccurate shit was written that Dunphy had wanted Ireland to lose or that he was ashamed of being Irish etc.

He was basically saying that we had the players but had set up in a negative and disingenuous fashion that got its just rewards.

Unfortunatley you cannot saying anything today and if you do there won't be any right of reply or a gentle objective revisiting of the matter.

Then Southgate needs to find a more effective way of getting the ball to him in dangerous areas while facing the opponent's goal.

Kane is an expert finisher being used by Southgate as a link up man for Raheem fucking Sterling. He's a very good link up man but that's not his real skill.

The point I've made throughout, and which loads of dickheads are today parroting, is that Southgate actually has a raft of skillful, quick and creative players available to him which would allow him to build a team around the expert finisher he has up top. Robson did it with Lineker, Venables with Shearer...etc. Bellingham, Foden, Sancho, Sterling, Grealish, Shaw - that is a more than decent pool of attacking players who should be able to feed Kane the chances he needs.

But Southgate only plays two of them at a time. He'd rather stick eight defensive players in and hope Sterling and Kane can fashion a bit of brilliance between them to unlock the door. It works, to a point, but it won't make them champions.

    Yep.

Benitez did tge same at Liverpool albeit in different circumstances.

If Gerrard/Torres didn't do it, we were usually going to draw at best.

4-2-3-1, hope Torres or Gerrard does, see out the 90. Thing is Alonso, Mascherabo and Kuyt were better than Phillips/Rice/

Although they took a conservative approach for pretty much every game that aspect certainly seemed to be amplified yesterday. Like you say it's like the plan was to nullify each other, then expect a moment would come where Kane/Sterling would break the deadlock. (second part isn't really of a "plan" and more of a hope) Shaw opening the scoring probably surprised Southgate as much as it did Italy.
