I don't get it. Whether people are saying things I agree with or disagree with when it comes to sports commentary, I find it easy to tune them out.

I turn on the TV ten minutes before kickoff and some cunt is talking nonsense, I just look at as he's doing his job. Talking shit on TV is his job just like the guy bagging groceries down the street is doing his job. The guy cutting hair at the barber shop is doing his job. And whether they're saying left wing or right wing shit, I just think, "Get on with it" because I couldn't give two shits what they have to say and I'll forget about it by kickoff.

 

It happens during the game too. I basically watch games with no sound.

Agreed. Somebody made the point last week about the different media approach to the streaker (camera turns away, commentators say nothing) vs the coverage given a dozen trolls on social media posting shite (wall to wall national obsession for a week). I'd say the psychology of each transgression is pretty similar.

And like you elude to, there's an obverse to all that which is to engender this odd sort of emotional fragility. The counterproductive subtext of which being that there really is something WRONG with being a certain ethnicity. Because if your mum has just died of cancer or your sister is in a wheel chair you can understand the raw, open wound reaction. By all means storm off the pitch, punch the guy, report him to fifa. Everyone would understand. But what does it say if we slot 'you're black!' into the same category?

 

I have my own theory about what happened and I am in no way minimizing racism.

My theory just based on both sides statements.

The word for black in Spanish is "negro." English speakers know that as an outdated word for a black person.

Central Americans are not really known to be politically correct. Costa Rica is a little more international and "woke" than the rest of the bunch but if there's one region of the world that doesn't have to worry about SJWs and a PC takeover, it's Central America. They're crude.
