Hard to see how James McCarthy breaks into get a regular game at the moment. Just one deep midfielder right now & thats, unassailably, McGregor whos a far superior passer and link up player- an attribute we need back there since neither centre back is very comfortable breaking the lines with higher risk passes or dribbles. I could see McCarthy being drafted in for his ball winning skills say at ibrox or away from home against better teams in europe but other than that i think he's gonna struggle. Maybe that changes if we sign a really good ball playing centre back and move McGregor upfield
