I remember watching a UK fight years ago and the trainer in the corner was telling the fighter that the opponent has no left hand so he doesn't need to worry about the left hand. Next round and his fighter got KO'd by a left hand lol. I am trying hard but can't recall the fight. Any examples of good or bad cornerwork that stand out to you?

Wasn't there a thing where Algieri's trainer said "we are about to let him out of the cage" against Pacquiao literally seconds before he got dropped? That was funny.

I can't point to a specific individual moment but Joe Gallagher has to be the worst well-known trainer I've seen. Every time one of his guys fights an elite fighter the tactic is always "cover up, walk forwards, don't throw anything, pray he gets tired". Every time, without fail. How that guy won trainer of the year astounds me.

Galleghar's a very good coach when he's actually in the gym, though. Saw two rounds of me sparring and immediately thought I'd benefit from an awesome trick I'd never heard of before. Lets me switch another fighters stance, force them to drop their weight onto the front foot, and draw out a jab while putting me a perfect position to throw a backhand.

I think it has a lot more to do with Canelo being a beast than it does Joe not knowing what he's talking about.

It is pretty difficult to find examples of fights where the advice given by the cornerman between the rounds would have had a noticeable positive effect on the result

Atlas knows the x's and o's really well but the moment he's in a corner it's like he thinks it's a Rocky movie. Your name is Teddy Atlas, not Tony Robbins. Cut the embarrassing theatrics.

Johnny Lewis, trainer of Jeff Harding, Jeff Fenech and Kostya Tszyu was a very good corner-man - always saw the big picture, super calm instructions in detail, right to the point, and a great motivator. Proof is in the pudding.

Jeff Fenech himself I'm not a fan of as a corner guy - he loves "revving up" his corner by screaming at the top of his lungs and trying to get his boxers to do what, in my opinion, they are unable to do - he treats his boxers like they are himself in his prime, and let's face it - who is? Anyway, just my opinion.

Fenech is a guy who should be getting his fighters in condition, since Jeff himself had endless stamina, and then defer to someone else to give corner advice.

Was it Snowell who loudly advised Tim Austin that Marquez was ready to go before Austin went out and got stopped himself in the next round..

I think Sowell lead the charge that night. Condom filled with ice water, or a latex glove.

I saw him in the post fight of Canelo vs Saunders and he was following the official narrative like his life depended on it.

I remember when Michael Katsidis’s corner when he was losing to Juan Diaz. Instead of giving him technical advice, or, trying to pump him up and inspire him, the guy said stuff like “you’re fighting lovely, you’re beautiful, I’ve never seen such loveliness before”

    Some of my favourites:

    • Fritz Sdunek in the Wlad vs Sanders fight....The thread specifically says "corner work". They should have been getting buckets of iced water all over Wlad, grabbing him by the hair, cutting his glove etc. Instead we got Fritz mumbling shit.

    • Sterling McPherson, Danny Williams vs Vitali. He was the guy MANAGER but there he was in the corner shouting and roaring. Williams got his arse burst in round 1 and came back and McPherson said "don't quit"... Then a few rounds later he was screaming about "he's tired Danny"...

    • J McDonnell, same fight. He just let McPherson do and say as he saw fit. McDonnell was chief second, he should have taken control and restored some sense of calm and order.

    • Whoever coached Joppy in the Tito fight. That guy hadn't got a clue...." nyuh nyuh nyuh, gotta get tough now"... Yeah OK fella. Good advice.

    • The Garcias in the Vargas vs Oscar fight. They let him take some..... in the first place. Speaking Spanish to indulge Fernando's bullshit macho agenda in the second. And the advice was all BS... "YOU'RE STRONGER THAN HIM!!!"... He's yours!! He's liable to quit!! Put some vaselina on him... YOU GOT HIM!!! FFS.

Compare Floyd Sr with Oscar vs Vargas and the Garcias for how a corner SHOULD/SHOULDN'T be worked.

Floyd Sr... Never a great talker, gave simple advice. He was in sole command in that corner.

The Garcias: shouting, roaring, rubbish.."use your left and keep your hands up". Fisher Price my first Boxing Coach.

    BTW RDS 5 AND 6
    ....

Floyd: this round right here, go to the body. Take the starch out of him. He's thrown his, you go throw yours. Stay off the ropes.

Garcias: "HE'S YOURS!! He's liable to QUIT!! THE FIGHT IS YOURS!!! DON'T LET HIM SURPRISE YOU!!

Vargas had just had a good round. Floyd addressed it. The Garcias didn't.

There was one fight on HBO (Guinn-Grant?) when Emanuel Steward rightly called Atlas out on his crap.

When they were in the middle of the ring before the fight started, Atlas gave Grant some speech about being confident and not to let self-doubt creep in. It’s not that Atlas said anything wrong, but couldn’t he have said this any other time? Like in the locker room before the fight away from the cameras?

Manny said that it seemed that Atlas was overly concerned about giving some dramatic speech when the cameras were focused on him.

I’ve never been that big on Atlas as a pro trainer, and think he’s too in love with his ego and the cameras. During his big moment when he allegedly inspired Moorer to the HW title, Moorer was barely even listening to him anyway. Atlas would give him some dramatic speech and Moorer would go out and sleepwalk some more, outjabbing a Holyfield who was suffering from HGH-itis.

Not only did Teddy do what he did because the cameras were on him, but Manny Steward had been about to tell everybody that Teddy would do exactly just that.

When Oscar came back to his corner at the end of the first round vs Vargas he tried to sit forward on his stool and Floyd pushed him back in a very "sit the fuck back" fashion.

That 1 minute is for RECOVERY, not being a wise ass tough guy.

Fond memories of DLH-Vargas. I don't mean the fight itself, but the build-up on here and other forums was HUUUGGGGEE.

Predictions were split down the middle, as I recall. I did think Nando was gonna be too strong for Goldie.
