When I used to box in my younger days my boxing coach used to tell me Boxing was 90 percent mental. And it's true mental warfare is an important part of a fight. Some fighters act like buddies and are cordial and respectful to their opponents like Manny Pacquio and Shane Mosley. And others Play the heel and use mind games to get under their opponents skin like Mayorga got under Vernon Forrest Skin. What were some of the greatest heels of all time in Boxing??? 1. Ali-they didn't call him the greatest for no reason. He was a general when it came to mental warfare. Coming into the Fraizer fight he kept calling Fraizer the big ugly gorilla it was the funniest shit ever. Ali was light skinned and good looking and Fraizer was dark and ugly like James Toney. That really got under Fraizer's skin. 2.Mayorga- he knew how to push people's buttons. Just a jerk with everyone he fought. 3.Bernard Hopkins- that time he was in Puerto Rico and snatched the little Puerto Rican flag from Tito's hands and just threw it on the ground just letting Tito know he had zero respect for him was epic. After that he made Tito his bitch.
And what are some of the worst heels? I mean guys who try to be heels only to fall flat on their face. I think a good example is Caleb Plant. It seems like he's trying too hard with the cheat allegations wich is kind of a low blow considering Canelo was exonerated by the hair follicle thing and has passed all his vada test before and after that incident. He took a swing at Canelo and got the worst of it. You can tell by his reaction as he was wiping his blood it didn't go the way he thought it would go down in his mind. He's just a weird guy. He brings up growing up poor and his dead daughter alot to get pity. But according to his deceased daughter's baby momma he mostly checked out through their daughters illness and basically lied about his daughter dying in his arms just to be the center of attention. If that's true who the fuck lies about that????
Good topic, I always had the feeling Plant was fake so I wouldn't be too shocked if this was true. Still, hard to say fir sure when you don't know the guy personally Another that tries to play the heel yet fails constantly is Claresssa Shields. No, your idle threats and braggings impress no one and it won't make you more relevant either.
George Forman in Zaire "He may need to be in the hawshpital" Vitali vs Chisora and Peter. Peter shit the bed and snatched his belt back all scurred and Chisorah hit him and ran off outside. Froch vs Groves. Groves is a fucking idiot for even getting involved. Hopkins vs Calzaghe and basically everyone but especially Calzaghe, Tito and Jones. never let a whiteboy beat me flag throwing in PR turtle raising chicken raising Roy Jones etc he never shut the fuck up and accused Roy of this and that. Darkie Smith in the Hatton fight. Basically rushing the ring like something out of WWE. His post fight interview was fucking epic he was banging on about how Mickey Vann {the referee!!} had been prancing about in his dressing room telling the Smiths how fit he {Vann} was etc etc. He was banned for life in the end and I think cost his son about £70K which was a WHACK 20 years ago Frank Warren. See above. Had Mickey Vann referee all of Hattons fight in the UK and wanted him to ref and judge the Zoo fight. One fighter - Terry Marsh- actually shot him in the face over money. Shot him and tried to kill him. Eddie Hearn Cunt. You mark my words:- the book is not yet written on that guy, especially regards Joshua. It's all gonna come out. Bobby Frankham Nephew of Johnny, former British 175 lb champ who beat Finnegan. Got stopped in a fight then grabbed the referee by the throat and went mental Came out apologetic the next day but got banned for life. BJ Saunders A cunt and a wind up merchant and a proper dog who likes to push people around and push their buttons. Makes light of the less fortunate Does it to people on the street, people in boxing, journalists, you name it. Started throwing anti-semetic shit at Colin Hart Loads of jaw-jaw with that little Georgian Dwarf that himself went to jail for racketeering Just a hint of this moron.........
Floyd has to be up there. It's the very reason he became the biggest ppv draw of all time despite not having a style conducive to making the big bucks. People were paying to see him lose. I do think he seems to be a bitter, narcissistic individual in real life anyway, completely unlikeable personality, but can't deny he played the villain well and seemed to revel in it.
That Froch-Groves face-off thing is one of the biggest mental ass-whuppings I've ever watched. He done an absolute number on poor George, who recently admitted it as well.
He was pretty respectful towards Barrera throughout the build-up. I don't really remember him trying to get under Barrera's skin, other than saying he would knock him out, which most boxers say anyway. I do agree though for most of his career Naz was a great heel, and funny to boot (bar the McCullough fight).
James Toney was a great heel because he was a funny shit talker and like the best heels, you end up liking them.
Chris Eubank was a heel of sorts, plenty watched specifically in case he would be beaten BJ Saunders isn't really a heel, he's just an unpleasant scumbag but it doesn't have any showmanship aspect, maybe like Mundine Camacho
Margarito wasn't originally a bad guy in public, but when he was caught with the scandal he milked the shit out of it by imitating Roach etc. It worked too, as people really hated him and he made big pesos in progress. Jorge Luis Gonzales loved to scare and embarrass his outmatched opponents. He played the part well but it didn't help him any when he stepped up
Yeah, Margarito played a great heel in the Cotto rematch. The post fight interview was epic. But IIRC it was Rios and Garcia who imitated Roach
The post-prison Tyson was a heel. The 80s Tyson was one of the most loved athletes in the world. No one was rooting against him in his prime.
Qawi had a bit of a heel vibe by the way he was smiling while giving asswhooping Hagler also to a certain extent played the heel, being always angry and menacing
Nah, Hagler was very popular and liked. Perhaps when he fought American's Golden Boy (Ray) he was disliked, but short of the Leonard fight, Hagler was pretty loved. I would say the same about Duran. Duran was only a heel when it came to Leonard.
You sure about that. I know he was always referred as perpetually angry, and tought a lot of people didn't like him because of that. Not to mention the white flesh incident
In quebec. Dave Hilton was a heel even before the pedo thing. English speaking guy that was beating the french golden boys and had tie to the mob
Hagler's not what I would consider a heel. He was able to pack Madison Square Garden with the entire crowd cheering for him (Hamsho rematch). It's not like Floyd, where 75-80% of the crowd is booing him, hoping he loses.
Broner was a good heel until he got beat up by Maidana. Then it became a bit pathetic as a heel is supposed to win a big fight once in a while.
