Not even close. If they were they simply wouldn't be playing in the MLS.

Great, so it's basically the same deal in football as tennis where everyone is mediocre outside of Djoker, Nadal, and Fed?

Jesus Christ sport needs new GOATs.

I deduced that lol, just wanted confirmation.

Which leagues should I be watching?

ESPN+ has La Liga, and a number of others it appears.

It is similar. There are basically two current guys who are consensus top ten GOATS (most have them top five, many have them top three). There are plenty of other excellent players at present but none are at, or near, that GOAT level.

Nah, it's just that Messi and Ronaldo have been so far ahead of everybody else and for so long it's insane. They're still arguably the two best players in the world on their day and are past the 35 year age mark. There's a great amount of talent out there, just don't compare them to a couple of the best who've ever done it.

The English Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga are the best three leagues. PSG play in the French League and are the second richest club in the world...

Don't worry about individual countries. Watch the Champions League. It's the best clubs from every European country being represented.

Most lists I've been seeing have Messi, Maradona, Pele as the top 3, with the order differing between them.

Ok, cool. ESPN+ has 2/3 - doesn't look like they have EPL.

I'd actually recommend a newcomer watch some league stuff first. It'll be interesting to see the different styles in the different leagues I think.

Calig is a big Everton FC fan and they play in that league. He'll know how to watch EPL in the US.

They do have English League Championship. Is that like lower tier than EPL?

Yeah, that sounds about right. Not having Messi above Cruyff, myself, but there you go.

Agree with the others that Zidane and Original Ronaldo are the two 90s standouts.

    That sounds about right.

If you look at a lot of top 10 lists you'll quite often see these other names behind them: Ronaldo, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Puskas, Platini, Zidane, Charlton, Best, Di Stefano

Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) and Mbappe (PSG) are the two players seen as the guys to take over from Messi and Ronaldo. They're both fantastic and well worth watching (although Mbappe is currently going through a shitty run of form).

Mo Salah (Liverpool) is in my opinion the best player in the world at this current moment, the guy is amazing and a joy to watch.

Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) isn't seen as a prospect, has been around for a while, but he is in incredible form right now, the whole current Bayern Munich team are in my eyes the best side in the world at this moment in time.

Out of that list I've got to see some Beckenbauer, and Di Stefano.

I watched highlights of the rest.

It's not a big deal if I watch the C-level guys before watching the A-level.

You'll also quickly notice that these football GOAT lists are very 'attacker centric'. You rarely see defensive greats, such as Maldini, Matthaeus or Moore in these lists. And as for great goalkeepers... Forget it.

That didn't surprise me. It's the same with American football. The GOAT lists are about about 90% comprised of offensive players.

I like the fact that world football is a lot more fluid, and artistic than American football.
