Got close once and got bashed 3-1 at Anfield in the game that counted. Late 1997.

Spice Boys and shit management, that's the tweet.

Collymore, Fowler, McManaman, all needed a kick right up the hole.

Then when Houllier came in- a man who KNEW the game- the inconsistency was just maddening.

Finished 2nd to Arsenal having lost a key game to Coventry and then signed some guy called LeTallec in the Summer.

    So many wasted chances.

He used to have a bar named after him in the stadium. Ashley renamed it 'Nines' to spite him when he was manager and we got relegated.

    Agreed.

For what is now considered the "top 5" leagues, the stereotypes are:

    Italy: Defensive and well organised

England: Lots of pace and high tempo (I think Germany is quite similar tbh)

Spain: Technical with an emphasis on possession

    France: 19 shit teams + 1 that has a fuck-ton of money.

He should have renamed it "Neins" and got Ronny Rosenthal to open it.

No imagination, no vision, so sad, ask anyone.

Pity because Lyon used to be a side that nobody wanted to face.

I remember Salah doing Chelsea when he was playing for BASEL in Switzerland.

Aye, Lyon had a monopoly in France until the oilmen came along. Marseille were always a handful once upon a time, too.

Remember that famous miss he had when he lifted it over the bar from a yard out with an open goal?

Just been thinking. How would have went over if instead of Newcastle, the Saudis purchased Totnum? (or even if it looked like a strong possibility)

Excellent player, that whole World Cup '94 Colombia side was packed with talent and were brilliant in qualifying from what I remember. They were one of the favourites going into the tournament but they shat the bed when it counted, in the worst possible way (Andres Escobar murder).

Yep. He went on to play for Spurs and Fantasy Football had a segment where they said "Ronny Rosenthal, let bygones be bygones and pass to Jurgen Klinsmann"

Speaking of which if anyone here hasn't seen it check out the documentary "The Two Escobars."

You don't have to be a football to enjoy it.

I can attest to this, I'm not a football and I loved it. That whole series actually (30 for 30 I think it's called?) is fantastic.

It's strange because he ended his career as Man Utd and England's top scorer, won a Champions League, a Europa League, won every trophy on offer in England yet there is still this sense that he underachieved, weirdly. He burst on to the scene at such a young age and looked an absolute phenom. He still had a great career but for me I don't think he quite hit the heights I believed he was capable of.

It's hard to say really, he wasn't an alcoholic or drug addict or anything like that, he just kind of became comfortable and petered out somewhat. It's a strange one, as like I said most players would kill to achieve what he has in the game, and he's undoubtedly a great player, but he maybe didn't have the drive to push himself to the very elite level occupied by some of the greats already mentioned. Maybe he didn't have the ability and I'm overrating the potential I saw in him when he came through, but at the time he certainly seemed destined to rub shoulders with that kind of company.

Re Rooney, He also gave up a few of his best years to playing second fiddle to Ronaldo, who went on to pick up his first ballon d'or at united. Same for Benzema but he had more left at the end due to cleaner living and a less physical league

Rooney had flashes. But he never really reached the level of his fellow contemporary strikers.

Well before my time but he seemed the epitome of what you want in a striker. Just get the ball in the net. He had various goal scoring records that lasted for decades some of which were only surpassed recently.

Levy actually offered Spurs to PIF. He wanted something ridiculous like £2b, so they told him to fuck off. It's one of the reasons that Spurs are the leading agitators against the NUFC takeover. Fucking cowards.

I read somewhere that the difference between him and Ronaldo was that Ronaldo trained and trained and trained until the lights went out, while Rooney did 'enough'. Can't remember where I saw it, but that's what I saw.
