I just watched this video from one of my favorite boxing channels called Rumy's corner. It was about whether or not Canelo was the greatest at 168? Obviously he's far from that. But it does raise a good question about where he ranks. What does your top 10 list of goats at 168 look like? 1)Calzaghe 2)Ward 3)Jones Jr 4)Toney 5)Canelo 6)Kessler 7)Froch 8) 9)? 10)?
I dont see the argument for having kessler above froch, nor ward below calzaghe. My list: Ward Froch RJ JC Canelo Toney Kessler Benn Eubank Ottke
RJJ was unquestionably the best fighter to campaign there, but he was barely there five fights before he moved to 175. It's either RJJ as the best fighter to campaign there or Ward/Calzaghe as the most dominant fighter to be there. MTF
FWIW, I think Canelo is becoming very overrated on the strength of beating some very average fighters at 168, but I'll leave that for another day. MTF
Yeah prime Roy. prime Roy. Then LDBC's own Irish Micky Ward. I would've had Calzaghe second but, there is the Sakio Bika fight to consider. The day the music died.
That's an interesting way to look at things. I don't think anyone in their right mind would call Canelo the greatest at 168 based on becoming the only undisputed champion at that weight. I don't see many overating Canelo based on his recent accomplishments no more than people overrated Roy based on his win over Ruiz. Both were already great fighters before but it was just the icing on the cake. And at this point it's pretty stupid to put a cap on Canelo's greatness or compare him to legends because he's only 30 in his prime and could still fight for 7 more years who knows what the verdict will be. But he is the best fighter of his generation.
Ward retired too young. That will hurt his legacy imo. He could have fought Beterbitiv or Bivol if he was he still active. Those would be harder fights for Ward than any guys he fought at 168.
