I feel bad for Shawn. He seems like a really good guy. His dad stopping the fight as some sort of punishment/power move for not doing what Kenny told him is beyond cruel. Then to top it all off belittle him during the post fight interview. I could almost respect a dad that laced them up but as far as I know Kenny was never a fighter himself so he has no idea what it's like.

Yeah, Roy Sr. came to mind when thinking about boxing's dads prior to this generation but as you said, he wasn't an attention whore. The first occurrence I can think of is Jack Mosley but he was still far off from the clowns parading around now. Probably Floyd Sr. was the first but at least he had a serious boxin background.

 

Gerry Cooney’s father seemed like a real POS based on Gerry’s stories of him.

HBO had some documentary called “Trophy Kids” about parents who push their kids into sports, trying to live their dreams through them, and sometimes just being plain abusive to “motivate” them.

In this case with Roy, it “worked” because RJJ was a supernatural talent. But then there will be countless others where the kid doesn’t have the talent so they’re all screwed up both professionally and personally. Or they do have the talent (Todd Marinovich) but fall off the rails.

I’m sure Roy still has emotional scars to this day anyway, how could he not?

Yeah, Derrick James definitely isn't a poor trainer.

It ain't his fault that Spence is an alchy.

Also, he's gotten a good deal out of the Charlos. As REED said, Jermell was crude as fuck early on.

You can't turn miracles with a guy who isn't a great talent. Jermell isn't devoid of talent, but he's not a great talent. DJ has gotten him about as far as his talent will allow.

Look at the GOATS - sure, Manny Steward molded Hearns and Lewis into legendary fighters, but Hearns and Lewis had the necessary talent there for molding.

Same with a guy like Roach and Manny.
