Name two fighters with one being of a far higher class, then see if the second fighter is better in any aspects than the first. I'll start: Floyd Mayweather Jr and James Toney. I'd say James has the edge in chin and power, although the latter isn't massive IMO. Agree? Disagree? Your turn.
I'd say chin is much closer than power to be honest. Btw, for this thread I think we should use fighter of similar style or else it's just too easy. Example, Mike Tyson and Kelvin Davis (though this one might be too extreme).
The best example I can think of is Duran and Chavez. Duran was far better at virtually everything, but Chavez had the edge in chin. Really his only advantage, and that one advantage wouldn't have been enough if they met in their primes.
Another example: Wilfredo Gomez and Orlando Canizales. Canizales had a better chin. Gomez was better at quite literally everything else.
Canizales was better defensively IMO when he was switched on. And I wouldn't even say Chavez had a better chin. Imagine Chavez going 15 with Hagler.
I disagree with that by a lot. Canizales wasn't hard to find at all. Even in his very best performance, against Seabrooks, he got hit plenty. Gomez was a much more elusive target when he wanted to be.
I disagree, I don't think Canizales was easy to hit at all against Seabrooks or in the rematch with Hardy. He had great head-movement when he used it.
Tyson and Tua is another obvious example. Tua better chin and stamina. Mike much much better at everything else. I'm not even sure Tua's chin was that much better. Mike fought more punchers. If Tua was getting hit by Ruddock's smash over and over again, I dunno how he'd react.
I was trying to give Chavez some type of benefit . He needed to use his chin a lot more than Duran, because Duran got hit a helluva lot less.
Roy Jones and Canelo Canelo has an iron chin but other than Roys china chin getting him KTFO 5 times he is better at everything else than Canelo.
Roy is the only fighter in history whom it took 16 years as a pro to get his so-called "china chin" exposed... at the age of 35... after dropping 25 pounds of muscle... Yeah, china chin I'm sure.
Roy Jones not being knocked out for years had little to do with age. There are plenty of fighters that have fought well into their 40s and never got knocked out. Because Roy Jones never had fundamentals to fall back on. He relied exclusively on his freakishly fast hands and athleticism so once father time caught up with him and he started getting hit with flush shots we found out he was chinny. That's exactly how trauma works. That's why immediately following a concussion (getting ktfo) boxers are suspended for months. To let the body rest and heal from the head trauma. If they jump in too early they risk a second concussion that's associated with second impact syndrome. It's sort of a dominoe effect that happens to some chinny fighters and they're never the same again. It's not a coincidence he got ktfo 5 times and it wasn't age alone. You Roy fanboys are weird.
Yeah, Roy fanboys are so weird, yet you're the creepy motherfucker who finds a way to mention him in more threads than REED and I do. Roy hasn't been a topic of interest on his forum in 16 years... the only poster who mentions him on a daily basis... is you. So who's fuckin weird? And before you decide to counter with me posting a Roy-related thread just yesterday, I posted a Roy-related thread yesterday ONLY because he made the HOF. And that's not unique to Roy, I open a thread every year congratulating the new inductees. YOU stay on his jock. Apparently he crosses your mind enough that you inserted him into this thread. And just about every other thread that you pollute. You have some personal vendetta against Roy. I dunno, maybe he beat up one of your friends or something. I don't know, and I don't care. Roy took numerous flush shots in his prime... nothing happened. I specifically can recall a moment in the Hall fight when he walked directly into a big flush left hand from Hall (who had power), and nothing happened. He fired right back, and continued beating Hall up. Toney hit him several flush shots... Roy didn't flinch. If Jones was truly a chinny fighter, it would have been exposed in his 20s.
his strength wouldnt show against jones jr at all if they fought. he'd be strong as fuck in his shell losing every round
I'm not sure roy got hit enough in his prime to know if he had a glass chin or not. Sure he got hit once in a while, but even wlad ate some big shots without effect once in a while. The way he was getting splattered left and right once his prime ended, makes me think he never had the best of chin
Right...CTE some people are more susceptible to it than others. There's a whole complex science behind it. Once they get chin checked they're never the same again. Guys like Hagler are golden standard for chins. It's not age, it's not how hard you get hit or how good you are.
I bring up Roy on a daily basis? Now you're reaching. I thought it was relevant. Canelo is the only man in history to become undisputed at 168. Roy was arguably the best 168 ever. Are we still on the same page? If there was one thing that Canelo does better than Roy is not get knocked the fuck out. Probably the only thing. Roy was faster, more athletic, more powerful than Canelo. If you removed your lips from Roy's cock you would see I'm actually giving Roy your lord and savior a compliment.
Apologies, Georgie Boy. I did contribute to derailing your thread. The Roy talk is over. Here's another example I thought of - Antonio Cervantes and Carlos Monzon. Cervantes was P4P a bigger puncher, and quicker handed. I would say Monzon was better at everything else.
I’d also give Toney the edge over Floyd in in-fighting and workrate. Despite his tendency to get outhustled at times, Toney would let his hands go in combination more frequently so he would end up throwing a lot more punches than Floyd.
Juan Manuel Marquez and Rafael Marquez. JMM had better boxing ability, counterpunching, and combinations. Rafa had a better jab, power, and ability to be the aggressor.
