Marco Antonio Barrera and Johnny Tapia were friends. Bruce Curry and Monroe Brooks were friends, but apparently had some falling out or something before they had their classic fight together. Micky ward and Arturo Gatti became friends. Ward also became friends with Zab after they fought, I remember reading some interview where Micky seemed pretty defensive of Zab and was talking about how they are friends. I think Floyd became friends with Genaro Hernandez after they fought. They had some article in a magazine (I think The Ring) previewing Floyd-Oscar and it definitely seemed like Genaro liked Floyd a lot better than he liked Oscar. Livingstone Bramble and Ray Mancini fought twice. Bramble wanted to get inside Ray’s head and called him a “murderer”. They became friends, or friendly, after that. Bramble went to the Haugen fight to support Ray when he tried to comeback to fight Greg.
Yeah, the media tried to spin a narrative of hate around US vs Germany, but you're talking about two soft spoken, class guys.
I'd love to see a high-end drama series by HBO or Netflix or something about the whole Louis-Schmeling story.
I think that that the Gatti.and Ward friendship was pretty much a media creation. They liked each other, but i dont think their relationship was strong enough to call them friends
Monzon and Briscoe were friendly I think. Monzon was generally a bit disconnected from other fighters but really respected Bennie and would engage with him at public functions while mostly ignoring other people. Famechon, Rudkin, Rose and Harada were all pals. Harada put himself between Rose and a group of racist drunks back in the seventies and Fammo put the ringleader on his arse when said dickhead took a swing at him. Jofre and Harada are big friends too along with Zarate like Xplosive said earlier. Chris Smith was brilliant with them, got them together and they've become friends with Leonard too I gather.
Yup. Wearing a bright orange suit I remember Ferdie Pacheco on the US telecast saying in r.2 that 'Bruno's the last guy I'd look to for inspiration'. Harsh, but fair. MTF
I watched some Netflix documentary about this shit recently. Basically, Frank got on a plane and rocked up at Mike's house Mike seemed genuinely pleased to have him there, but Frank was like a doe-eyed puppy the whole time. MTF
Its easy for me to imagine. Toney always seemed like a good dude underneath the hard, trash talking exterior. He's essentially the same as Duran. Their ring personas fool you into thinking they're heartless men outside the ring, but that isn't the case.
It was a DICK Move on Pacheco's Part... Knowing Full Well INSPIRATION Can Be Derived from the Most Innocuous of Sources, Who was Pacheco to Flippantly RULE OUT Any Potential Impact Bruno Could've Had on Benn That Night???... Pacheco's Career w/Ali Resulted In Him Being Among the Bigger ASSHOLES to Commentate a Boxing Match...He was a Jaded Prick BEFORE Larry Merchant Became One & the Shot @ Bruno (Who REED's 100% Indifferent About) was Unnecessary... REED
I couldn’t stand Pacheco. He was insufferably smug and brought little to the broadcasts. We already had a boxer in Czyz beside him doing commentary. What did we need a doctor doing commentary for?
Pacheco hardly covered himself in glory during that broadcast. Rewatching it back now is cringeworthy in several spots. MTF
Pacheco Allowed His Time w/Ali to Go to His Head; as if Being In Ali's Circle LITERALLY Made His OWN Dick Bigger Than it Really Was... Pacheco Offered COOL Ali Back Stories and Could Speak Knowledgeably on Ali MEDICALLY...Problem Is, Pacheco Allowed This to Foster a False Sense of OVERALL Boxing Knowledge, Which was NEVER There to Begin With, Frankly... When You Combine EGO w/an IRRITATION of the Next Generations of Fighters, You Get Ferdie Pacheco...And Larry Merchant, to a Lesser Degree... REED
I was at a football game and had a conversation with a raider fan. He claimed to be Genaros cousin. Told me when Genaro died from cancer Floyd Mayweather paid for the funeral. The reason I know it's true is because I had heard that before from a different source. I'm not sure they were friends but Floyd was thankful to Genaro for giving him his first opportunity to fight for a world title. Whether they were friends or not I don't really know.
Klitschko and Klitschko are friends. Usyk and Lomachenko are friends. Tony Bellew is everybody friend.
It's true. I'm not a Floyd fan but got to give credit where credit is due. This coming from a Floyd hater. Floyd Mayweather Giving Back to Genaro Hernandez: Money May Paying for Funeral
The Genaro Hernandez Win was 1 of the FEW Times You Really SAW/FELT How Much Boxing Meant to Floyd; Dude Cried Like a BABY in the Center of the Ring and the Shit was TOUCHING... That Said, This was "Pretty Boy" Floyd, Not "Money" Mayweather...He's a DIFFERENT Person Now... REED Vaguely Recalls Floyd Doing Likewise After Stopping Gatti, His 1st PPV Main Event... But Anyways, Based on it Being his 1st World Title, It Doesn't Surprise REED That Floyd Paid his Respects to Hernandez...REED's Always Heard the Same Story About Floyd Covering Genaro's Funeral Expenses... He May Have Chipped In or @ Least OFFERED To for Diego Corrales' Funeral as Well, But REED Can't Recall for SURE... REED
I happened to be at the MGM for the Mayweather vs Corrales fight. I remember Castillo fought Bazan in the under card if I'm not mistaken. I'm not gonna lie and act like I was a big Corrales fan. I was for sure a Floyd hater . To this day I don't know why the late Corrales(RIP) looked that bad. Then again looking back I didn't realize at that time just how great of a boxer Mayweather would turn out to be. Say what you want about the guy he was special.
Nonito Donaire and Andre Ward have been good friends since childhood. Mike Tyson and Zab Judah are also buddies. Teofimo Lopez and Rolando Romero Jaron Ennis and Brandun Lee
Everybody loved Genaro Hernandez. He was one of the best people that you could encounter. The stories about him spending time in the gyms with kids starting out, or using his status to build up somebody on their way up are endless. Just the other night I was talking to a friend of mine and he talked about how Genaro spoke highly of him when he was given an opportunity that many thought that he didn't deserve.
Yeah, Genaro was one of the sport's true class acts. Similar to Arguello, just a really good guy. Cancer fucking sucks.
Bob Arum also helped out Genaro’s family by paying some of hospital bills. Genaro was a very respected guy.
Yeah I ran into him and his wife many years before he passed away. I recognized him because it was after the Delahoya fight and we talked boxing for a little bit. Very nice people. He loved interacting with boxing fans.
