It's mental to me that Scotland have never got past the first round of a major tournament when you consider all the great players they've had in the past. Then you have sides like Wales who get to a major tournament once every forty years but make semi-finals.

Watching Portugal vs Brazil in 66.

Eusebio was basically slammed to the floor everytime he touched the ball and still decimated Brazil's defense. He outplayed Pele in this match... but Pele played on one knee.

Eusebio would be a God today where defenses couldn't mug him.

I know. And Wales lost more games at the 2016 Euros than England, including TO England.....sometimes things just break that way for you. England went home in disgrace and Wales were "heroic" despite having just that one big win over...

... Belgium are the same. Theoretically should have been dominating. Somehow manage to fuck it up.

I wish i could find it but, somewhere on yt, theres one of those 'data is beautiful' graph videos charting the nationality of players scoring goals in european club tournaments. Scotland was consistently in the top three neck and neck with England - ahead of Spain, Italy, France, Holland etc - until the early 90s. Which is pretty remarkable.

Tbf: i think England have underachieved every bit as much as Scotland over the decades. By every other underlying metric they've always been as great or greater a footballing nation as Germany or Italy but they always blow it

I think we need to compare like for like....generally Scotland have, pfp, been better, with 1978 being a clear exception.

Its hard to say if England "fell short" in 2018 and 2020/21... Or if they wronged every ounce out of themselves.

Absolutely. Generational scorers will always find a way though. A merely "good" scorer would likely struggle, but generational goal scorers will still find a way to get the ball in the goal.

I think England over-achieved in 2018, the side which made the final last year is a genuinely good side though. Again though, the home advantage definitely helped. I do actually think the current England team has a trophy in them, I just don't believe Southgate is the man to deliver it.

We played well when we met them at their place earlier in the season and were somewhat unlucky to not leave with a point so I'm quietly confident we could get a result.

Alright I'm done with watching old Pele matches.

The last thing I'll note about him - everyone knows he was a prolific scorer, but he really doesn't get credit for being an outstanding playmaker.

Watching Santos games, Pele plays the #10 position beautifully. He was always in control, and always seemed several moves ahead with the ball at his feet.

That really differentiates him from a pure Brazilian striker like Romario or R9, because those guys had no where near Pele's passing ability and awareness.

    Twice in a row.

In 77 he beat out Michel Platini for the award.

I already looked at 1975 winner, Oleg Blokhin, in an old Dynamo Kiev match.

    Blokhin was amazing!

Keegan is very underrated. Recently watched a Liverpool vs Leeds game from the 70s - Keegan looks like a visitor from the future, his speed and touch was special especially considering the shitty pitches of the time.

Yeah, watched him today. Keegan was a badass. Very quick and beautiful dribbling.

I read that in the 70s there was a running debate as to who was better - Keegan or Dalglish.

Eusebio is the number 1 guy I've watched in the past few days who looks like a "visitor from the future," to steal from you.

Eusebio was every bit as fast and athletic as the fastest guys today. A true athletic freak. He was faster and more athletic than Pele, with the separation being that Pele was a lot more skilled and smoother, and a much more advanced dribbler.

    He was missed tonight.

I'm getting tired of Fenway Sports Group now. Too fastidious by far.

Also worth mentioning, an often forgotten fact about Keegan is he came very close to winning the league with Southampton(!) in his twilight years. He seemed to have that magic ability to raise the level of the players around him as well.

Keegan was too good by far for the British mentality. You have to be an absolute cunt to get much done as a manager in football in general and in particular in the modern Prem era.

    Keegan was just too nice.

Keegan doing the Ronaldo "look at my abs" routine before Bremner gets his pasty Scottish "Tennant n Chips" body out too.
