While I respect Best's opinion, Dalglish wasn't in the same league as Di Stefano, as Di Stefano has a good case as 4th all time behind Messi/Pele/Maradona.

The clips suggest that Di Stefano was phenomenal.

I think a better question is like I said, Dalglish or Keegan?

The whole 'NUFC 1996 can't defend' thing was a total myth. They actually conceded the second least goals of any team in the league that season. Only Man Utd conceded more. Howey and Albert were international defenders. The goalkeeper was the Czech Republic international 'keeper. That game was what it was because there were just loads of absolutely world class attacking footballers on the same pitch at the same time. Newcastle played a Beardsley-Asprilla-Ferdinand front three in that game FFS.

England were clearly no worse than the second best team in Mexico 1970 but managed to blow a 1/4 final by dint of Banks being poisoned by some rat cunt and Ramsey taking Charlton off to protect him with a two goal lead. They somehow managed to not even qualify for 1974-78. By 1982 English clubs had established a hegemony on European club competitions with almost entirely home-grown players but they couldn't get to the KO rounds of Spain 1982 and let that fat cheating genius mug them in 1986. They royally screwed up Euro 1992 and didn't even qualify for Euro 1994. England were the best team in Euro 96 and should have won that tournament. They underachieved there, no doubt about it. They went to France 98 having won that mini-comp in France and then proceeded to lose a group game they should have won and then managed to fuck up the Argentina game. They were second or third favourites to win that. The failures of the so-called 'golden generation' are well enough documented but for that side, of CL winners in almost all positions, to not even make a semi-final, is an awful underachievement.

Italia 1990 and the last two international comps are probably the only ones (bar 1996, obviously) where you can honestly say Ingerland have performed in line with a fairly realistic expectation or better. In every other instance they have underachieved IMO.

AgREED broadly on all counts. This is the best opportunity Ingerland have had to win something since the 1990s IMO. They probably should have won the Euros, truth be told, and I agree that a different manager might well have been the difference.

Early to mid/late 90s. His best form was at my team, QPR, and Feeb's team, Newcastle. He did win a trophy at Spurs too I think.

X, have you watched anything involving Peter Beardsley? He's the most talented footballer I've ever seen live. He'd be worth at least £100m if he played today. An immensely ugly, but incredibly clever footballer.

Obviously 67 was the year the stars aligned but the Celtic team of the first half of the 70s was better. Connolly, Dalglish, Hay, McGrain, McCari, Deans added to McNeil, Johnstone, Gemmil, Murdoch, Auld, Lennox, etc. What a squad. Another European cup final and two semis but the ball never bounced right.

An immensely good Shellick side, that. Really should have won at least one more EC.

I've seen Andy Cole. I'll check out Sir Les tonight. Were they comparable as players?

Yes, though Cole was a more instinctive, clever player. Sir Les was a brick shithouse of a forward - tremendous in the air and with power in both feet.

It was some team. The equivalent of football porn. There was a spell around Christmas 1995 when I was convinced I was watching the best club side in the world.

Aye, at the time to me there were strong parallels with the Celtic side that year, both underdogs taking on the hegemon of the day playing utterly kamikaze attacking football. We know what happens to kamikazees but they're talked about fondly afterwards for it

Fwiw, Ginola was apparently *really* close to signing for Celtic before he opted for newcastle, my lord he'd have tore it up here

X, have you checked out Vinnie Jones yet? One of the most underrated and skilled exponents of the game. Harshly overlooked by the "experts" because they didn't appreciate his subtle talents.
