What is your enduring memory of De La Hoya?

Ike had a history of late collapses. Oscar hit him with his Sunday punch and 20 more free shots and couldn't end him. He didn't even dent him for others to come and clean up.

 

And yet... Oscar couldn't finish him.

 

Quartey actually came back that round after Oscar couldn’t finish him.

 

Who ever stopped Ike? The only other guy that put him on his ass IIRC is Lopez, who was a gigantic puncher himself. It's cute and evrything to be perpetually unimpress, but in this case, i dont think it's warranted

 

Ike won the fight imo. Oscar spent 75% of the fight standing there and doing fuck all but eating jabs.

At the very least it warranted a rematch, but of course that wasn't gonna happen.

 

I thought Quartey clearly won it. He outboxed De La Hoya for at least 7 rounds. I had it 8-4 Quartey.

 

Great fighter, but never the best around, and a really weird dude.

 

Did people actually pay for it though? I don’t recall ever seeing that infomercial before so I doubt it took off like Tae-Bo did. If anything this was probably around the same time and probably tried to be a copy cat of Tae-Bo. The only problem was ODLH was the total opposite of Leonard and had terrible charisma with a personality that was so full of phoniness you could see it miles away. I heard Oscar had apparently banged thousands of women but that definitely was based on his looks and fame. I would bet anything none of those women went back for seconds and if they did, it likely wasn’t for his personality.

The problem for Oscar is that at this point, he's most famous for his losses.

The memories the general public have of him are:

1. Getting thrashed by Pac.

2. Getting outboxed by Floyd.

3. Quitting against Hopkins.

4. Blowing the Trinidad fight.

They might remember the war against Mosley, but again... that was an Oscar loss...

His wins are a distant memory to all but his hardcore fans, and that hurts his legacy. He doesn't have that true, dominant defining win. Most would say the Vargas fight, but even the Vargas win is tainted, because Tito softened Vargas. So Trinidad has a defining win; Oscar, really doesn't.

 

He had power but he was essentially a one handed fighter for the most of his career and an inconsistent finisher when he had opponents hurt.

I remember Arum costing himself a lot of money when he refused to put the first DLH-JCC Superstar (DLH's coming out party) fight on PPV

 

The greatest moment/victory in his career was when he got out of his contract with top rank.

 

I remember that, I saw it on Closed Circuit in San Rafael (large Mexican population because of the Canal district).

They were pissed as fuck when Chavez lost.

I hate Oscar he always seemed fake to me. But one thing he is known for is being a good finisher. Specially in the lower weight classes he was a monster puncher. And I also don't think semi retired Oscar losing to Mayweather or PAC is what he would be remembered for. He was way past it and really shouldn't be held against him.

 

Agreed, but the Pac fight is a bad look no matter what considering he was cherrypicked. On the other hand, I think his fight vs Mayweather is a big + on his record considering how close it was. I feel it shows a younger version would have won.

 

I don’t hold those fights against him either, even though I enjoyed seeing Pac punish him.

But at 147 at least, his power was good but he let Quartey off the hook, let Carr off the hook when he had him early before taking him in the 11th.

Oscar definitely packed power, but it wasn’t quite what the fans and media made it out to be.

 

Winning the gold medal. Had high hopes for him since then. Professionally, the Vargas fight. He almost got knocked out of the ring in the first round and battled back for a hard fought stoppage.

 

I don’t think it was.

Oscar was starting to get hit with a lot of shots and he didn’t wanna take a beating.
