...was merely one installment in their fabled history of scumbaggery.

Check this out ...this is from the World Cup in 1966 and concerns the Argentines and the Uruguayans, their neighbours.

They weren't the only ones who misbehaved but they attacked right across the board ....., headbutts, spitting, kneeing, slapping, throwing furniture, refusing to leave the field , attacking the referee-TWICE- ...attacking dressing rooms, buses, all of it

I want to emphasise, a lot of fouling went on but they took shit to a new level.

Pele was kicked out of that tournament and had his legs broken. The trophy was stolen and found by a dog in a bush. The Brazilians were worried that they might get banned for drinking coffee as a stimulant and wrote letters saying that tea had way more Caffeine.....

....this shit was actually going on.

Those dirty ass Argentines used to rape Pele out there from the footage I've seen. Sadly for them, he still lit their asses up.

Pele was a physically strong MF, btw. Fast and strong. With his talent and skill, it's scary to think how good he'd be in 2022 with modern training.

I don't think he'd be better than the best today, I really don't..I honestly think Pele was much closer to maxxing out , physically, than a lot of others. Half the players didn't have any muscle tone. They were balding, or had no teeth, etc.

Bill Shankly at Liverpool used to give his players steaks cos he heard that Joe Louis ate steaks. That's about as advanced as it was...it really wasn't much better than that..workouts was whatever they'd learned in the army.

Jumping jacks, press ups, a few sprints, high jumps, a few miles run, etc.

Unlike boxers, footballers really have got a lot better at their game.

I'm not saying Pele wouldn't be a top top player , he would, he just wouldn't be a star like he was in 1958 or 1962.

George Best would absolutely have to quit drinking. No way he'd last today behaving that way. He'd be as good today as Sadio Mane or Firmino, for me.

Since yall saw his prime in the 90s, tell me: Is Mbappe far off from being on the level of Brazilian Ronaldo?

If you look at Argentine boxers and footballers, ruggedness and strength is a recurring theme. Every now and then they have a Messi or a Locche. Mostly it's Bonavenas and Mascheranos.

Different styles and mentalities so it's hard to say..let's see what MBappe does after his 2nd or 3rd serious injury.

I don't think MBappe is as good as Ronaldo but time will tell.

Ronaldo could be 20lbs overweight and still hurt you.

His goal Vs Turkey in 2002 is a rare gem and a skill most guys don't have..zero pullback, no draw, just bullet pace and accuracy when there was no threat obvious.

It really is an extraordinary goal.

I think 98% of guys from the 60s would struggle today, but Pele looked pretty generational by any measure.

Eusebio is another guy who looks like he'd still be among the elite forwards if he was around today.

Maradona had the typical Argentine build. Broad ass shoulders, legs like tree trucks.

All of those defensive legends would need serious recalibration to survive today. They could do it but they'd need serious realignment.

Only a handful of defensive players from that era come to mind as being really up to snuff... Bobby Moore, Dino Zoff, some Italian lad whose name escapes me, in Mexico 1970.

Pele, Eusebio, they'll adjust fine, with tuning.

I don't think guys like Jack Charlton or Geoff Hurst would make it.

Yeah he actually relied a lot on his unique physicality .very low center of gravity. Once he went too fat he had issues.

I definitely think a defender would struggle more.

I think I singled out Pele and Eusebio because they were athletic freaks. Eusebio, I just learned was a sprinter, which explains his incredible pace.

Currently watching USL Championship (2nd tier in the U.S. behind MLS).

These guys play hard, and the games are fun, but they probably aren't qualified for any top 50 league.

My wife is from Peru and she’s well versed on Argentina’s history of dirty play, corruption, and shady back door shenanigans.

I won’t deny that they play some nice futbol on occasion but there’s a reason they aren’t well liked.

That's a really good question. I would say he isn't far off, but he isn't as good. Their trajectories are quite similar actually, both burst on to the scene as young phenoms and scored a ton of goals. Both have won the World Cup (Ronaldo technically has two but didn't play one single minute in '94 so nobody really counts it).

I think they are around the same in terms of pace and finishing ability, but skillwise Ronaldo was a clear level above imo. Irish does make a good point that stylistically they're quite different, and it's also worth pointing out that in the 90s it was more conducive to individual talent and skill taking centre stage, where as Mbappe plays in an era where there is much more focus on team play and structure. I just don't think Mbappe will ever be the player Ronaldo was for that one season at Barcelona, he was absolutely incredible. The only players I've watched to have seasons that have surpassed it are Messi and Cristiano.

After last night Man Utd & Liverpool are the only British clubs to reach more European finals than Rangers. Probably as it should be, really. Hopefully Sellik can regain parity before my pubes go grey.

To add to the list, Celtic played the Argentine champions in 1967 for the 'intercontinental cup'. They injured two of our players in Glasgow and spat on four others, which the Celtic players found far worse. Before the return leg our goally was injured by a missile before the game started and had to be replaced. During the game 6 players were sent off and the riot police had to separate the players twice. Bertie Auld was sent off by the Argentine ref for retaliating to a foul and found the decision so outrageous he refused to leave the field causing the game to be suspended for several minutes. He played the rest of the game!:Jest: The tie finished 2-2 on aggregate before they won a play-off in South America

Of all the South American nations, Argentina is the most European and the most Italian. They know all the dirty tricks. Nobody pisses in the punchbowl of football like the Italians. They invented Catenaccio or "door bolt" football. Who is the manager of Atletico? Simeone, an Argentine.

Latin temperament plus Italian dark arts. You get the Roberto Duran's of soccer. Dirty, conniving and skillful.

Mourinho sums it up.....calls this "top defending, a clever guy"

This is basically the mentality you're dealing with.

When Suarez handled the ball on the line in the World Cup, he also moved his head to make it look like he hadn't, and played on too. :Jest: Then he pretended to be crying and ran around laughing seconds later.

Even years past his best, 2004, he took the piss at Old Trafford. I just don't see MBappe doing that. He could do it . But as you say his chances will be limited in any event he'll never have free rein to just go at it

    Fuck Luis Suarez.

For me, he’ll never be in the class of strikers that Ronaldo, Henry, Villa, and Eto’o were.

Excellent striker. And Barca did let him go too soon I think, but I never liked him.

His actions in south africa in 2010 were a disgrace.
