Neither were exactly all time great material. They ARE however all time great punchers. But overall, who would you say was better? Who ranks as "greater"?
Love both fighters, they were always in entertaining fights with their seek and destroy style, kill or be killed mentality. Their scary KO’s were icing on the cake. I think they’re both pretty close. Julian Jackson has wins over Terry Norris, Herol Graham, Buster Drayton, Baek In-Chul, Thomas Tate Edwin Rosario has wins over Jose Luis Ramirez, Howard Davis Jr, Livingstone Bramble, Loretta Garza, Frankie Randall I’ll take the guy that one shot KO’d Norris in 2.
I'd go with Rosario....I feel there are fewer 10 stone fighters out there historically that I'd give the edge over Rosario. I can pick a 160lb fighter from every era that could beat Jackson but not a 140lbr from every era that could beat Rosario. And 140 wasn't even his best division. Jackson was moments from losing to Graham and if we're going to split hairs then Rosario's losing effort Vs Chavez or Road Runner Camacho is worth more than Jackson's losses to McClellan or McCallum. For such a vaunted hitter it says a lot that he couldn't put permanent damage on a guy who DaMn near died in his next fight. I get people seeing Jackson's power and being awed by it but let's face it,Norris was just designed to be blown away by somebody like Jackson and was himself sparked or badly hurt by really insignificant guys like Troy Waters. Jackson was the better big-puncher but if you look at all of it Rosario wasn't as reliant on the power. And Graham had him if he just stayed away for a minute more. Graham himself never won the big one. It's also worth bearing in mind that Rosario was probably substance-abusing for large parts of his career. This isn't a denigration of Jackson I just feel Rosario had a little bit more about him and had more adaptability or versatility across the divisions against a really good diverse range of opponents. It's just a personal preference, I always go for a guy who showed a bit more across a broader spectrum of opponent..
Jackson has the better signature win between the two, but I think Rosario had more ability and Jackson wouldn’t have beaten a JCC caliber fighter either and I don’t care what the judges said, Rosario beat Camacho. I think Jackson through his sheer one punch power plus the devastating KO he scored with it is gonna be more remembered, but as Irish pointed out, Chapo had a bit more to his game, and I think Chapo’s power translated better across divisions than Jackson’s did.
This is a hard one for me to say. I think Chapo was more gifted overall, but Jackson had more heart, and that does count for something. Both of them threw beautiful combinations before they fell in love with their power. I think Chapo was better suited for facing boxer types than Jackson, but Jackson was more dangerous for a come forward opponent. The key to beating Rosario was to get inside on him, and press him. That'd be a suicide mission against Jackson. But then again, as I said, Chapo was more adept at handling slick guys than Julian. I would actually call it a wash between these two.
There's a helluva lot more lightweights who would beat Rosario than there are junior middleweights who would beat Jackson, but that's misleading because 135 is so much historically deeper than 154.
I agree with Rosario being the more skilled fighter than Jackson. Both fighters can be one dimensional and overly reliant on their power, more so with Jackson. Rosario in his early days was actually a really skilled boxer who used great footwork and good punch selection. Rosario could actually show good defensive skills from time to time when he chooses but seemed to always prefer blasting out opponents.
I don't think Rosario is that much better suited to beating boxer types. He did almost lose to Davis, and lose to Camacho.
Young Rosario wanted to be like Gomez, but he just didn't have Gomez's reflexes and fluidity. And obviously, he lacked Gomez's intangibles.
Yeah that's why I limited it to 10 stoners. Even then the guys who are beating Rosario are probably pfp material....Duran, Whittaker, Gans, Williams, Floyd. Pavlik might have beaten Jackson. Ketchel too. Hopkins, even doofus Taylor if he can stick to his boxing. They're a step down from Gans, Floyd, etc. I mean Jackson basically enjoyed precisely 20 seconds of the McCallum fight. Once Mike got him hurt he just covered up and still ate shots.
Yeah but both of those guys are such epitome of "boxer types", with some speed and power in Camacho's favour. And Rosario chased him out of it. I guess he almost lost to Davis Jr like Froch almost lost to Taylor. He pulled it out.
I think in my mind a P4P match with Jackson against Camacho would play out exactly the same way the Rosario fight went. So this is a push
I kinda doubt Pavlik beats Jackson. Kelly just ate too many shots for me to pick him. All the shots Miranda and Taylor caught him with, if that's JJ, I don't think it would have ended well for Pavlik.
My point is i look at Pavlik as a 2nd tier fighter, historically, much like Hatton at 140.... And i give Rosario a much clearer nod vs Hatton than i do Jackson vs Pavlik. I think Rosario is just a little bit less vulnerable and a little bit more rounded.
I think Camacho barely edged it, tbh. I like Rosario more than Camacho, but I remember thinking Hector won a razor close fight.
first tought was that julian was clearly greater, but upon reflectin, im no longer so sure, As for better, I'll go with Julian. Hisdestruction of Drayton is greatly underrated. He looked like a million buck in that one. Shame that he fell so much in love with his punch afterward
Yeah, but do you think Jackson would be remotely as competitive as Rosario was if he had to face a runner as gifted as Camacho? I don t
