Canelo-Bivol is the most famous recent example.

The first Mosley-De La Hoya fight for me is a good example. Oscar was in need of an impressive KO win after the Trinidad debacle and his team most certainly figured Mosley having come up two weight classes would be overwhelmed by Oscar’s perceived size and power advantage.

What are some other good ones?

I don't think anyone thought that about Oscar and Mosley. They had been evenly matched since they were 9.
That was the best money fight available and the whole reason Mosley moved up. I can guarantee you that nobody on the Oscar side was thinking that it would be easy.

I was gonna say that. Mosley was a monster at the time. And if I'm not mistaken the delahoya fight was not his first fight at 147. He had fought Wilfredo Rivera before Dela Hoya at 147.

Howso? He fought the second highest rated featherweight in the world in his second fight, then fought the number one in the fight immediately following.

James Kirkland vs Nobuhiro Ishida is an obvious one. Not only was Ishida supposed to be a tune up fight but they didn't even have a Japanese interpreter, that's how much they thought Kirkland was gonna win.

Victor Ortiz vs Josesito Lopez is another one. It was supposed to be a set up for a potential fight between Ortiz and Canelo. And then Ortiz quit on his stool (again).

Adrien Broner vs Marcos Maidana is the most famous cherry picking gone wrong IMO.

Because of Salido's age. By the time Salido fought Loma he was on the decline. They overlooked Salido and didnt take into account the experience of Salido. A hard nosed veteran that knows every dirty trick in the book. Its a cherry pick because they were so cocky they believed Loma could beat a guy like Salido with only two fights.

De La Hoya-Pacquiao. Oscar was desperate for a win against a somebody on the P4P list. Him and his team figured that not only was he a lot smaller, he wasn't a defensive type so he wouldn't even have to go around chasing him. Sure knockout.

Underestimated both Manny and the effect of weight cutting.

That doesn't sound like a cherry pick. I don't see how fighting any ranked fighter in just your second fight can be perceived as a cherry pick. Especially not when the guy was #2 and much bigger.

Maybe cherry pick is too far since it is Shane Mosley.

But I will forever believe that Team De La Hoya was extremely CONFIDENT in taking that fight vs taking the Trinidad rematch at 154 lbs. And the way Oscar fought that first fight told me that he totally underestimated Mosley at 147.

When Angel Espada was welterweight champ, he and his manager Yamil Chade went to see a Forum card (or Sports Arena) and on the card was Andy 'The Hawk' Price against an 18 year old kid named Pipino Cuevas. Price outboxed the kid over 10 rounds and Espada started screaming at Chade, "Him, him! I want to fight him." Chade, using common sense said, "Oh, you want to defend against Andy 'The Hawk' Price?" Espada said, "No, I want to fight the kid." Of course, only the WBA would allow a 15-6 18 year old to fight for the title against a champ like Espada. But the rest is history.

You make it sound like Loma was your average Joe off the streets that just took up boxing and challanged Salido on his 2nd fight lol. We are talking a highly decorated amatuer fighter with a 400 and 1 loss récord from an eastern bloc nation that are known for breeding guys like Usyk, Bivol, GGG ect. Its not uncommon for them to turn pro at a much later stage in their career. Its a cherry pick because they thought Salido was old and easy pickings. Dont think for one minute Loma's managers and matchmakers would make that fight thinking he would Lose. Youre giving Loma too much credit. Must be a fan his.

I meant eastern bloc nations in general have excellent amateur boxing programs and do quite well as pro's

Umm well yeah, no shit. Typically managers don't go out of their way seeking an opponent who they think will beat up their fighter.

So by that logic Pernell Whitaker vs Jose Luis Ramirez 1 would also be considered as a cherry pick gone wrong.

I'd say it was admirable but also very risky for Loma to take on a tough veteran like Salido in only his 2nd pro fight for a title. Doesn't matter if he was a highly decorated amateur, its still a different ball game when fighting a seasoned pro like Salido so early in your pro career. It was a ballsy move on their part. Now imagine if Loma fought Gary Russell Jr in his 2nd fight instead of Salido, would Russell Jr be considered a cherry pick?
