Fixed modern fights

Which well-known fights do you believe have been fixed? I mean fixed in a strict sense, so that there have been at least two participants in the plot and money (or a title chance or such) has changed hands.

Most often fights that appear to be fixed are more like set-ups. Managers choose inept opponents or ones who have lost their motivation.

Other times it is sheer incompetence, either by fighter, ref or the judges. Brain farts happen in life, although they can look highly suspicious.

And of course there is the gray area, where a judge rules, either subconsciously or knowingly, in favor of the hometown guy, to get more paydays, but isn't actually paid to do so. Or a fighter who takes a dive to collect the money but isn't paid extra.

So, which fights do you believe we're actually fixed? Canelo vs Kovalev, Lennox vs Holy I (round 5), Oscar vs Hopkins...?

Canelo-Kovalev rubbed me the wrong way even when it was signed. Seeing how it transpired didn't exactly do anything to erase my suspicions.

I don't think Oscar went in with the idea of diving. He was probably hoping he could go the distance and either win a close (bad decision) or be able to complain about the scores afterward and have some form of "moral victory".

Once Hopkins started slowly upping the pressure and mugging him he decided to end it knowing it was only going to get worse. Bernard wasn't going to let it get away from him like Hagler did.

Juan Coggi-Eder Gonzalez 1. The referee and some other people in the commission were on the take, or just plain blatantly fixing it for the hometown fighter. Most outrageous robbery ever.

Definitely Canelo vs Kovalev. If there ever was a guy that gave a vibe he can be paid off it's Definitely Kova

i've always been skeptical of the holy vs. ruiz trilogy. it was a time when holyfield had limited options. why not a trilogy with a hispanic contender? so i think holy let those fights be close. call me crazy.

Yeah it was outrageous (though huge credit to Cogi for coming back from this, even with the extra help), but I don't think it fits into the strict ''fixed'' fight UGTBK is looking for. Just homecoming taken to a disgusting level

I think the ref job in rjj/ruiz was aberrant enough to qualify as fixing but i'm sure many would scoff at the idea.

Hilton-Ouellette 3 was always suspiscious imo. Hilton loses a lopsided decision in a listless performance yet he gets the title shot in his next fight instead of the more popular and younger Ouellette.

The referee literally took a point off Reid for having the temerity to punch Ottke in the face.

No way in Hell Foreman-Moorer was a fix.

That right hand landed directly on the point of Moorer's chin. Moorer is a guy who always had chin issues, so why is it so surprising that he gets laid by one of the heaviest punchers of all time?

He was laying there flat with blood streaming from his mouth.

No fighter is THAT good of an actor.

If anything, Jones' camp may have wanted Nady to be the ref (I don't know if they pursued it or not) because of his strict line. There's nothing wrong with that as everybody is looking for such advantages.

Furthermore, I maintain my take that it was Jones' counters that pacified Ruiz, not Nady. When the hell did Ruiz ever obey the refs and why would he have started here?

I've never been a fan of John Ruiz. He had done nothing to deserve a fight with Holyfield. He was best known for being starched in 19 seconds by Tua. There was always something that didnt sit right with me about throwing Ruiz and Oldiefield together and calling the winner a champion. That trilogy was as necessary as having a third nipple. Just like throwing Jones and Ruiz and calling the winner a HW champion. Just thinking about how crooked and slimey the people behind this fight had to be makes me wanna puke.

Nady is infamous for getting too involved in a fight. There are refs that make their presence known from round one and affect the momentum of a fight. If you watched boxing long enough you should know refs can really fuck things up for a fighter. Yeah I believe Nady was in on the fix.

Exactly, and adding to that fighters and their corners regularly talk to refs before a fight and bring up concerns about illegal and dirty tactics their opponents use so they can be on the lookout for it. Almost surely that happened here and it's good that it did. Did they hand Nady a brown paper bag in exchange for him enforcing the rules? That would be one really hilarious case of "corruption". :Jest: Nady didn't even deduct a point from Ruiz ffs.

I guess Mills Lanes was on the take for disqualifying Tyson after he bit off a piece of Holyfield's ear.

    • WBC Super Flyweight Title
    • Weights: Kawashima 115, Navarro 114.5
Many felt that the previously unbeaten Navarro dominated the fight. Canadian judge William Boodhoo gave Navarro 11 of 12 rounds (1 even), but was offset by the other two judges which awarded close decisions to Kawashima. Kawashima was cut over both eyes for most of the fight.

Foreman-Moorer isn't a fix, because Moorer is so inept that literally everyone on here (even the posters that hate him) would pick him to get khtfko against the windmill Wilder

Again the ref wouldn't need to deduct a point in order to have an impact on the fight. Ruiz was infamous for being a mauler and excessive holding. We saw that in the Holyfield trilogy. As ugly and as boring as it was holding and fouling was part of his style. Don't think for one minute that Nady's constantly interjecting himself in the fight by pausing the action or breaking them up didn't have a negative impact on Ruiz's game plan. Jay Nady has exceeded every other referee in the annoying asshole department. Lets just say he's the Micheal Jordan of being an annoying I get in your face bitch. Why do you think Judah threw a stool at him. Roy's people knew exactly what they were doing in picking Nady. Don't know if he got a manilla envelope full of Benjamin's or a paid by wire but the fix was definitely in.

  30. Ugotabe Kidding

Of course a ref can change the fight, absolutely. And I have no doubt Roy's camp was happy to learn that it was Nady in the ring. Maybe they even pushed for it (like Tyson's camp who wanted to remove Mitch Halpern from the rematch).

I don't believe Nady was paid extra however. And I believe his role in this particular fight gets exaggerated, since no ref was ever able to control Ruiz
