I remember in 2014 their coach at the time Jurgen Klinsmann was heavily criticized by many U.S. media outlets and for saying winning the WC at that point was unrealistic.

I think there is a segment of the population that doesn't care for the sport simply because the U.S. isn't the best at it. If they were a dominant force all of a sudden soccer wouldn't be so meaningless to them.

 

I know a lot of Italian Americans, and I ain't heard much from them about it, because they mainly follow to root for Italy.

A lot of Latins I know are pulling for Brazil or Argentina.

And then of course I know a few Latin women who only watch when CR is playing.

It's exactly the same in Canada. Because i have German heritage i've always cheered for Germany. That is only in soccer though, any other sporting event i would back Canada.

A big part of it is certainly tribalism, but it's also because the sport basically isn't promoted here and meant nothing to me as a kid growing up.
