Did you not notice how massive banks of the Argentine "fans" never moved a muscle after Argentina scored.

Aye alot of the argentina strips in neutral areas were doubtless just locals with their messi strips but there must've been 20k legit travelling fans. Then the tv cut-off to fanzones in buenos aires and they're all crying tears of joy. Good for them.

For 70 minutes, that was the worst load of shit you could imagine. Afterwards, it was unmissable viewing. The best final in my lifetime, by a mile.

I still think that Maradona is the GOAT. What he did in his career... However, Messi is now very much in the conversation, a step up fulfilled imo. I had Cruyff above him before today, but there is no case for that now.

Pele, Maradona, Messi - the three now occupy that pantheon and it's a subjective opinion of which is the best.

Still think England fucked this, mind.

I watched it on Rds and the commentary was very neutral. I think people in Quebec usually like France but Messi (like Cristiano Ronaldo) is very popular here so I guess they felt they had to remain neutral.

I basically said that. How England went 2-1 down to that lot.

Just my ping, but i think giving that sort of historical bump (or not) to a player with a 16 year career based on which way one penalty shoot out went is kind of bonkers!

He had a goal and an assist-assist before that too though but yes....he's no maradona.

Im not saying he is or isnt- im saying if he is, he was every bit as much so on Sunday morning as on Monday morning. Giving one game of a thousand odd career that much weight doesn't seem rational to me, he didnt become one scintila better or worse

It isn't just one game in a thousand, though is it? It's the final of a World Cup. It's the biggest game a fitba player can play. And he won. Which Cruyff couldn't. Hence the 'bump'.

I still don't rate him as highly as either Pele or Maradona, for the record. But I can see the argument now.

I still rate Maradona over Messi but I can see an argument for Leo now.

I don't think there's much between Messi/Pele/Maradona in terms of ability and skill. All on the same exact tier.

If anything, going off film and watching a number of old Brazil and Santos games, Pele from the early 60s looks the most talented of the three in a vacuum, and if you gave a 21-year-old Pele access to modern training facilities and diet, I'm sure he'd be incredible today.

But I think you can have them in any order and no one should complain much. Long as Piers Morgan's boyfriend isn't mentioned among them.

One thing common between Messi, Maradona, and Pele, all three have/had an incredible view and awareness of the pitch. Like they're several moves ahead of everyone else at all times.

Messi's longevity at the top is probably the deciding factor.

Messi and Pele had better longevity, but if you need one of the three at the absolute apex of their powers to win one big match for you, then you probably pick Maradona.

Breaking it out down further between the three: I would say Pele was the most athletic/explosive of the three, and perhaps the most ruthless finisher in front of goal of the three due to his unmatched ability to score equally well with either foot, and finish in the air better than the other two.

Maradona was the most dynamic and creative dribbler of the three, and I think the best passer of the trio.

Messi I think was/is the right mix of most those attributes, so that gives him the argument of being the best.

It is just one game though. What happens if Messi twists his ankle 2 minutes in and argentina lose?

R9 if he didn't have health/injury issues, and Best if he wasn't out chasing booze and women I reckon could have been in that top 4-5 all time conversation.

Pretty much spot on I'd say. Good breakdown.

The 3 stand alone. I've actually changed my mind on the order of them myself a few times since Sunday.

I still feel gutted for R9, despite him winning World Cups and multiple championships. He was a freakish talent and the unrealised potential of him at his peak, injury-free, is scary. Still had an ATG career anyway which says something about the level he could have reached.
