This fight is never mentioned among Duran's great performances, but it should be. I think around this fight was really the start of Duran's true peak, where he brilliantly integrated offense/defense, and could seamlessly switch between countering off the back foot one moment with attacking an instant later. Mind you, Guts went on to the win the lightweight title by stopping the excellent Rodolfo Gonzalez AFTER this fight. He also went on to beat Buchanan after Gonzalez. Guts was an excellent fighter. This fight is easily one of Duran's top 5-10 best performances IMO.
Aye it's a great performance. A little bit better imo than something like Mayweather twatting Corrales, just that Corrales is more recent and was more heavily hyped than an Ishimatsu type fighter with a glossier record. Beating a fighter of his level these days would draw widespread acclaim. Ishimatsu was weird, a bit like his countryman Shibata. Excellent but somehow less than the sum of his parts. A bit fortunate imo that Gonzalez was abruptly dropping off and no longer at the races and that Buchanan had the eye injury (alleged, but I've always thought that Buchanan's timing and defensive radar being so off are consistent with impaired vision).

Great performance over a very solid fighter. I always thought that was the start of him perfecting his boxing skills and skill.

Recently I‘ve been in constant encounters with some crazy Inoue-worshipping creep and it got to a point where I put that loser on ignore, which is a first during my 10+ years on that forum. That guy even made the claim that Inoue was the GOAT bantamweight and said that he would KO Jofre, Olivares, Zarate.

For the past 15 or so years in the classic section of ESB, there are a couple posters who always troll with their SRL hatred. They keep arguing that Ray wasn’t past his prime when he fought Norris and he lost only because he just couldn’t Norris’s speed. A recent thread also said that Floyd was better than Leonard at every aspect of boxing and would fare better against Ray’s competition than Ray himself did. Mario Sanchez has such great stuff in HD. 1080 and 720p. Also sometimes with separate camera angles. There’s one of Mayweather-Ndou with HBO commentary, but the camera angles are different from the HBO broadcast, so we can see new angles. “HD Boxing” has some nice HD quality fights as well.
