A favorite theme for fight announcers and analysts to harp on is the need for shorter fighters to get "inside" and for taller fighters to "stay outside" and "use their reach." To me, this is a major over-simplification and almost never tells the whole story. An obvious and extreme example is PBF vs. Corrales. What are some other examples of the shorter fighter winning big from the outside? Or tall fighters who dared to defy conventional wisdom and won by fighting "inside?"
Gilberto Roman had unusually long arms for someone of his stature and that usually helped him win his fights at long range. He was also the shorter man as well. His fight against Rojas II is a good example of shorter fighter winning on the outside
Recent example: Usyk boxing the fuck out of Joshua for most of 24 rounds. (He went inside too, but did damage from basically everywhere).
Floyd Mayweather-Genaro Hernandez Kostya Tszyu-Ben Tackie Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito 2. Even in the first fight, Cotto appeared to be doing the better work from the outside. Although Margarito was landing some long right hands, most of his good work was up close, especially with the uppercut. Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito Mike Tyson was surprisingly having a lot of success from the outside and with his jab in the mid rounds of the Tony Tucker fight, despite giving up about half a foot in height and a foot in wingspan.
