When it comes to a mythical match between Canelo Alvarez and Roy Jones Jr., there are strong arguments for both sides. However, there are several reasons why Canelo Alvarez has a real chance of winning.

Firstly, Canelo Alvarez is a modern fighter who has benefited from years of technological advancements in the sport of boxing. Training techniques, nutritional supplements, and equipment have all improved over the years, giving modern fighters an advantage over older ones. Canelo has trained with the best trainers in the world, including Eddy Reynoso, and has access to the latest technology, which gives him an edge in terms of preparation.

Secondly, Canelo Alvarez is a versatile fighter who can adapt to different styles. Roy Jones Jr. was known for his athleticism, speed, and movement, but Canelo is a more complete fighter who can box, punch, and brawl if necessary. Canelo's power and accuracy are second to none, and he has the ability to wear down his opponents over the course of a fight.

Thirdly, Canelo is a master at slipping punches, landing counter-punches, and working the body. His ring generalship is also superb, allowing him to control the pace of the fight and dictate the terms of engagement. While Jones was certainly a gifted athlete with incredible speed and reflexes, he was known to be somewhat wild and unpredictable in the ring. Canelo's disciplined approach to boxing could give him an edge in this matchup.

In conclusion styles make fighrs. Jones was a master at using his own speed and footwork to avoid his opponents' punches and land his own shots. However, Alvarez has shown that he can track down even the most elusive opponents, as he did in his dominant victory over Erislandy Lara back in 2014.

    this was the funniest part:

"...his dominant victory over Erislandy Lara back in 2014."

it's a preemptive gaslighting ...... you can't point to the lara fight....he dominated that one. :D

The way his ginger head sits directly on his shoulders with no neck in between makes my sphincter shrivel and I want to sick my own liver up. And that would fuck anyone up in fairness, even Chuck Norris.

Pretty sure this was meant to be a joke post.

Canelo wouldn’t even be able to hang with James Toney or Bernard Hopkins.

I agree competitive, but I think Johnson would edge him IF there's objective scoring.

Reggie was a fuck of a lot better than BJS.

To be quite honest, if Alvarez had come along in the sixties for example without any of his current backing, hype and protection and was thrown into the shark tank on short notice with the likes of Mims, Hank, Bahama, Fernandez, Benton, Briscoe, Little, Carter, LMR, Archer etc, he'd incur his fair share of losses imo.

He wouldn't have access to his special steak.

BTW, you don't have to go back ad far as the 60s.

In the 90s, Canelo's legacy would be completely different. He would not be going down as a HOFmer.

Ha ha, yeah it was just an arbitrary choice of decade. He'd probably dovetail in quite nicely in most of the strong/one champion eras as a very good, dangerous contender in fairness. Probably earn a title shot and notch up some very good wins in with a few defeats if he got the rub of the green.

I'd agree that Johnson might beat him in a closeish fight if he displayed enough of an edge and a second gear that he sometimes lacked.

Put Canelo in the 50s and we'd look at him like Henry Hank or Holly Mims.

Canelo never went up against anything as good as prime Hopkins. It's easy to write off Tito at 160 in 2023, but at the time in 2001, what he did to Joppy was not expected. Canelo would have indeed beaten Joppy, but he wouldn't have effortlessly annihilated him in 5 rounds.

Trinidad was a better fighter than Canelo. Canelo's just bigger.

While it is true that Tito had an impressive victory over William Joppy and that Canelo has not faced a fighter as good as prime Bernard Hopkins, there are several factors that suggest Canelo may have the edge over Trinidad.

It's important to consider the level of competition each fighter faced at 160 pounds. While Trinidad had notable wins against Joppy and victories at 154 over David Reid, and Fernando Vargas, he did not face the same depth of talent that Canelo has faced in recent years, including top fighters like Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, and Sergey Kovalev. Canelo's victories over these elite fighters demonstrate his ability to compete at the highest level of the sport.

Moreover, Canelo has continued to improve his skills and refine his technique over time, while Trinidad's career declined after his loss to Hopkins. Canelo's defensive prowess, counter-punching ability, and body work are among his greatest strengths, which have helped him win fights against skilled opponents like Golovkin and Jacobs.

Lastly, while size is certainly a factor in boxing, it is not the only one. Canelo's ability to effectively utilize his size advantage, as well as his superior boxing skills, could give him an edge over Trinidad in a hypothetical matchup at 160 pounds.

Steve Collins and Froch could beat Canelo at 168.

Benn Vs Canelo .....I'd like Benn's chances. Especially in London.

Eubank was a bit cautious post-Watson . , Canelo might have nicked rounds like Ray Close did.

I can’t see Canelo doing well against most of the top 160 pounders let alone the 168 pounders.

He’s not blindingly fast, doesn’t really have a great jab, he’s short, fights in spurts, and he’s ineffective when backed up.

Nevermind the likes of Roy, Ward, Toney, and Calzaghe at 168 or Hagler and Monzón at 160.

I don’t see him beating Hopkins, Trinidad, or Pavlik at 160.

He doesn’t have the tools to beat them IMO.

I think Canelo would beat Benn.

Collins and Froch, yes, they both had styles that would give Canelo Hell.
