I used to understand seeing people pick Golovkin in this match up. But my opinion on Golovkin is different today. I think he was one of the most overrated fighters of all time who benefitted from a weak division. I think the pre-Hopkins version of would beat him via wide UD or stoppage. Golovkin doesn’t have the style to beat Tito imo.
I'd make the 2012-2014 Golovkin the favorite TBH. I think the Golovkin of those years would be too physically strong for Tito down the stretch. However, it's far from a foregone conclusion. Tito isn't Macklin, Geale, or Stevens. He'd be a live underdog.
If he boxes like he did in the Canelo fights he wins 7-8 rounds. If he went in there looking for a khtfko then Tito could win
Hed outjab Trinidad. Even Trinidad from the Joppy fight at his best. Trinidad would be right there for him
But the opposite is also true, Golov would be there for Tito to hit. Let's be very honest, prime Golovkin NEVER faced anyone as offensively gifted as Tito. He was feasting on no-hopers. Tito is a live underdog.
Tito at the very least would beat the old Golovkin that Canelo barely got by. But yeah when you really look at Golovkin’s resume, it’s bad. Like who has he beaten? Lemoo had power but limited ability. Ouma? Proksa?? I would take William Joppy over those 3 guys.
It's no murderer's row, but he absolutely demolished them impressive fashion. Also because he was on such a long KO streak people often overlooked his chin. Even when older and unable to get out of the way he was absorbing flush shots without problem. I favor GGG. Of course Tito is not without a chance of course, but even if it's a fire fight it's no given Trinidad is the one who comes out out on top. If Golovkin approached it more as a boxing match and concentrated on the jab Tito would be in for a long night.
That’s fair. But I can’t imagine it not being a grueling fight. Golovkin’s chin would be repeatedly tested as well, especially since he’s not really a mover type. GGG is definitely solid. I don’t question his heart. But I would be curious to see how he reacts in the face of someone who is of equal height and reach as him, who’s able to nail him repeatedly with well timed hard counters.
If it's grueling that would come down to how GGG chooses it to go more than what Trinidad can force. Getting nailed repeatedly also goes both ways. Golovkin is not only a bomber himself but never been knocked out or even tasted the canvas.
GGG wins. Bigger man, and even if Tito doesn't get knocked out, he was prone to flash knockdowns, that will cost him points/rounds.
Canelo’s power did make GGG hesitant, moreso in that second fight. But prior to that series with Golovkin, GGG hadn’t fought anyone. It’s why I think he’d have have problems establishing his kind of fight against Trinidad.
I think GGG wins this. He’s naturally bigger and would be busy with the jab and straight rights. I also think Tito had fallen in love with his power by 01’.
