Richardson Hitchins

Any thoughts on Richardson Hitchins? He’s a skillful US fighter at 140 who seems to be overlooked by the likes of other more known US fighters around his weight class such as Shakur, Tank, Haney, Martin, Russell.

There’s been sparring footages of him holding his own against Shakur. Do you think Hitchins will be another top fighter at 140 or 147? He looks good so far but obviously needs to keep stepping up his competition.

 

He looks talented for sure. But we need to see him tested.

hitchins is a typical NY fighter with more mouth than ability.

 

I don't think you wanna do a comparison of how many great fighters NYC has produced versus how many greats LA has produced. It's a comparison you'll badly lose.

At the end of the day, we've produced more boxing greats than any other city in the world, including having produced the GOAT.

who are the five best fighters from NYC the last 30 years?

 

Outside of Bowe, Zab, and Teofimo, we've had no one special in recent years.

Guys like Briggs and Paulie were belt holders though.

Lopez is the best fighter from NYC the last 30 years. Bowe dont count

 

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have a lot to say about that.

 

Philly is our only comp post-1920. Pittsburgh doesn't have the kind of long-term boxing culture that NYC has.

In the last 100 years, that rural Pennsylvania area has done a better job of churning out great quarterbacks than great fighters. That is to say, American Football rules the culture in a city like Pittsburgh. NYC has always been a city that's more about baseball, basketball, and boxing.

Plus, Pittsburgh hasn't had a significant fighter since Paul Spadafora (sad).

Even today, NYC and Philly have significant fighters (Teo and Boots).

 

Yeah. Pittsburgh isnt a great boxing city, unless you go back to the cro magnon era of the sport. Bar billy conn, which good fighter did they had since ww2?

 

Interesting NFL mention. As a bears fan i hear arguments they haven't won shit since 85 and only 1 super bowl. Which is true, only chip I've seen in my life. No one seems to give a fuck about their 8 previous NFL championships, most hall of famers of any franchise, most or second most regular season wins all time.

Seems hard to take much pride in what a city has accomplished boxing wise prior to when I began watchin the sport.

So I guess for this kid it's all the same if something occurred in nineteen ot six or 2012.

Basically as a early 40s age new Yorker you've witnessed tyson, and now maybe Lopez as hof caliber fighters, and that is it

Just off the top of my head, that's six all time greats and four of the best middleweights ever. Plus the actual GOAT.

Obviously Philly has better, but I think Pittsburgh's list of top fighters still beats NYs.

 

Last time I checked, Bowe was also in the HOF.

And that doesn't make sense. You can have pride in something your city has accomplished, even if it's before you were born or before you followed a given sport.

I don't know about that. Sure, Greb looks like shit in that sparring video, but the context matters at least in the slightest. We're talking about someone whose messing around with one of his heroes who was pretty damn old at the time, not someone preparing for a fight.

Plus, every single account of Greb's style paints him to be exactly what Robinson struggled with the most. The relentless, teak tough, LaMotta/Fullmer/Basilio type pressure.

Not to mention, that even if Greb sucks dick on film, there's plenty of footage of guys like Tunney, Loughran, Gibbons, Walker etc who don't.

 

This thread really took a fast turn, not that I’m complaining but also not what I was expecting.

 

Just to get back on topic Hitchins got some talent. Leaving Mayweather promotions was a good move, he really needs a better promoter who can lead him to the right direction with good fights for him.



Also a sparring footage with him and Shakur.

 

His last fight was against Jose Zepeda. Very boring and negative fight from Hitchins but he got the win. He needs to learn to take more chances and let his hands go.
