I've referred to Cotto as being the "Oba Carr" of the era of the late 90's early 2000s. Because that would've been his level. That's not a diss to Cotto, he and Carr were very good fighters, just not great.

Cotto might be not be on the ATG level but he's well above Carr. For starters he's actually won some big fights.

Cotto is better than Carr. But he’d fare no better against the likes of Trinidad, Quartey, and De La Hoya than Carr did. He wouldn’t be able to beat prime Mosley and Forrest either imo. Whitaker schools him.

Cotto is a very good fighter but not as great as the elite 90s welterweights and junior middleweights.

Yeah it would have been ugly if it was the De La Hoya version of Mosley in there with Cotto. I don’t think Miguel would handle that hand speed at all.

Oba Carr comparison doesn't do Cotto justice. Cotto was a very good fighter borderline great. Trinidad is probably a little better than Cotto.

When comparing Canelo and Trinidad in the context of their careers it seems like nobody is pointing out the elephant in the room. That is that Canelo despite a green loss to Mayweather, has evolved into a much better boxer, showing the ability to learn from defeat and get back into winning ways. People always point out that Canelo learned from Mayweather not sure if that's true but what is true is that there's a noticeable difference between the Canelo who faced Mayweather and the one we see today.

On the flipside, Trinidad was a dominant force in multiple weight divisions from 147 to 160 but his loss to Bernard Hopkins was a turning point in his career. Hopkins outclassed him and I believe that fucked with his head as it seemed to have a lasting psychological impact. Trinidad was never quite the same after that fight, leading to rumors about whether he might have used loaded gloves throughout his entire career. We can't be sure, as he went from beating a mediocre middleweight champ like Joppy to getting his ass kicked by a prime Hopkins, who is an all-time great. Was it that Tito didn't have loaded gloves or was it that we overrated Tito's skills and greatness the same way some people assumed Spence would beat Crawford?

In the end, greatness in boxing isn't only about championship titles but also about how a fighter deals with adversity and reinvents themselves. Canelo demonstrated that ability while Trinidad struggled to bounce back after a significant loss. It's a perspective worth considering when evaluating their careers h2h.

He's won what he's won because he wasn't in there with Tito, Oscar, Ike in their primes.

No, but he wouldn't have defeated Mosley and some others either. He's an also ran in any era.

Canelo would have been beaten just as badly as Trinidad was against Hopkins. The difference is that Trinidad’s opponents were streets better than Canelo’s opponents.

Matchmaking plays a major role in Canelo’s success.

No, Canelo would have taken less of a beating against Hopkins because he doesn't have as much heart as Trinidad. He would have gone into a defensive shell rather than keep trying and get stopped.

Make no mistake though, the 01 Hopkins would 12-0 Canelo.

I don't think that's necesarily true. Canelo has better defense than Trinidad. Let's be honest Trinidad fought the same way every single fight. In contrast Canelo has shown versatility. Trinidad didn't fight bravely he just fought the only way he knew how to fight. He wasn't going to turn into twinkle toes ala Micheal Nun. We saw the writing on the wall vs DLH. He had no answers for Hopkins.

No. Canelo would throw hard shots to the body, 1 at a time, and carry the fight on two cards, if not all three. He'd come forward!! He's tough!! SMFH.

I wouldn't go overboard on Canelo's defense. It's solid, but he ain't Miguel Canto or Niccolino Locche in there.

I'm not saying he's the Mexican Willie Pep. I'm saying his defense is better than Trinidad's and after having knocked out Hopkins daddy(Kovalev) I'd say he fares much better than Trinidad vs prime Hopkins.

Canelo has somewhat grown on me over the years, I think he has really nice technique and has definitely improved in that sense as his career has progressed. Saying that, he has no shot against Hopkins. Canelo is the very specific fighter Hopkins has a field day against, a low-output guy who needs to fight in his own rhythm. Hopkins would take round after round and break the rhythm constantly. He doesn't stop Canelo, who does indeed have a good defence and chin, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's a whitewash.

I don't think Canelo beats Hopkins. Then again many said the same about GGG that he would whitewash Canelo and turned into a pretty even trilogy. I would favor Hopkins but Canelo would give Hopkins a better fight than Trinidad that's for sure.

I don't see why he would. Canelo has nothing for a prime Hopkins. Not a goddamn thing.

He can't box with Hopkins at range. Doesn't have the pop to seriously hurt Hopkins. Can't successfully pressure Hopkins because Hop is physically stronger and a FARRRRR better infighter.

Can't outlast Hopkins considering the comical gap in stamina. Can't outwork him. Can't out-think him.

Can't do shit but get punched in the face and lose every round.

The following middleweight/super middle greats would be stylistic nightmares for Canelo: Jones, Hagler, Monzon, Hopkins, Toney, and Ward.

There's others, but those guys are especially wrong for the Ginger. I guess if I'm Canelo, I'd pick Ward out that bunch, since he only gets outboxed there. The rest of those guys would give him a bad beatdown.

Maybe but Hopkins was never a puncher. At least Canelo wouldn't get ktfo, have his flag stepped on and have his daddy jump in the ring to save him.

IFFFF Canelo kept pushing the issue, Hopkins would counter him to death and stop him.

But Canelo doesn't have the stones to do that. He'd shell up like a pussy just like he did against Floyd.

Not if he’s moving backwards all night and just looking to last the distance like he did against Floyd.

You like to bring up De La Hoya a lot against Trinidad but if you wanna go that route, then a Canelo lost agaisnt Lara.

A fighter of Lara’s caliber doesn’t beat Trinidad.

He stopped Glen Johnson in that exact same fashion. Counter to death until it's called off. There aren't many guys tougher than Glen Johnson, and weirder things have happened than Canelo being stopped by a much better fighter.
