Fury is the only guy out there who , like Hearns Vs Duran, seems literally designed to beat Wilder. Too big, too strong, too long and elusive. Everyone else is on a tightrope. They're winning until they're not.
The point I made was that Wilders a live dog Vs anyone BAR Fury. He can't beat Fury. Fury is simply his nemesis.
I actually agree with Irish. Usyk is a clear favorite over Wilder, but Wilder isn't without a chance. AJ landed his share of clean shots on Usyk. If Wilder ever lands clean, Usyk could go.
I guess Derrick James is the flavor of the month trainer for reclamation projects like Joshua and now Ryan garcia
Wilder is shot but that punching power is real…if he clip u on the side of the head it’s usually over….
If he can’t improve Ryan, nobody can. I thought Ryan would go with Roach but Freddy is old and frail as fuck now.
Yeah but he didn’t take him seriously. I think Lewis would take a puncher like Wilder seriously and the gap in skill is so wide that I’d give Wilder almost no chance of winning.
I watched this video. U like wilder, reed? Pretty unlikable dude to me Excuse maker who really beat no one of note outside of an ancient ortiz Id pick ngannou over him but it would be entertaining and I'd watch. Wouldn't pay for it tho Let's see him face another ancient lefty from China of one gets a belt
Dig up the thread for Wilder-Stiverne 1 and look how many fightbeat experts picked no one (Stiverne) to win.
Herein lies the problem with 'eye-test' If Ortiz was now the #1 hw of the planet, I believe he would be pretty appreciated, because he has rather beautiful technique (nothing extraordinary) and good power. However, since he got whipped by Wilder, he must be crap by default, because Wilder is crap by default, because he doesn't pass the eye test. The possibility that Wilder is better than he looks (in Monzon style but lower level) is seldom considered.
Fwiw at the time of the first fight i think Ortiz was probably on the Whyte, Povetkin, Parker, Ruiz type level, maybe slightly better. So thats a solid win.
At the time of their first fight Stiverne was the #2 contender for Wlad's title, behind Povetkin. Back then the division was shallow too, IMO even more so than now
Christ Almighty! "Monzon style but lower level." Monzon was one of the most skilled and intelligent fighters to ever live, with a deep resume. His style just wasn't esthetically pleasing. Is is the NOT the same, or even comparably the same as a man who has NO skill or boxing acumen, and has little in general outside of having a devestating right cross, and athleticism, and whose resume is tragically thin.
You are reading the comparison way too directly. I was talking about the errors in thinking when we speak about 'eye-test'. I totally agree Monzon was supremely skilled. But think of it this way: suppose he is the same fighter otherwise but had a shit chin. Obviously he would have lost to Benevenuti. Now, had that happened, nobody would think of him as a master technician whose chin let him down. Rather he would be known as an awkward Argentinian who wasn't good enough. So in a sense, he doesn't pass the eye-test but the 'success-test'. We only see his skills AFTER we see how good he is. Luis Ortiz (remember, this is not a comparison of fighters but mechanics of thinking) passes the 'eye-test' fairly well, but doesn't get props because he doesn't win enough. So we don't really trust the eye-test either Wilder fails the eye-test, and thus his (little) achievement is unnoticed. But at some point we need to look the results, instead of explaining them away with the eye-test. Now, I do believe there is MORE to Wilder than a right hand haymaker, and his (few) results prove that. He wouldn't have gone even this far, if all he knew was a technique that looks primitive even for a novice. I believe Wilder's assets are: 1) great power 2) great reach and ability to use it 3) the ability to keep his poise despite a weak chin, so that he is in position to land even when he is under fire 4) the guts shown inside the ring 5) the ability not to telegraph his shots even though they look telegraphed. Those are real abilities that not evensome of the good fighters have. To call him a bum with big punch, based on the eye-test, is wrong, as would be calling Monzon 'an awkward big guy', based the eye-test. Again, not comparing the fighters, but the paths of thinking. Monzon had supreme skills. Wilder is better than he looks
I disagree. I don't think Wilder fails an eye test. Quite the opposite. I think his violent KO wins fooled people into thinking he was better than he was.
