They were steadfast. Relied on keeper when they had to. Next best player in the World kept very quiet. It's a world removed from a side that used to get spanked by Villa or Tottenham....

They had a great chance to set the new record , which is still owned by Liverpool, an incredible 16 years record. 16 years.

We had to win our last 3 group games and we did, 8-0, 4-1 and 4-0.

You guys can keep that low-level Champions League.

I'm watching the quarter-final leg of Liga MX!

Celtic didnt punch above their weight tbf- they just weighed alot more. In 03/04 when we were fending off interest from man utd for Larsson, premiership tv money was starting to go mad but we still had a comparable turnover/wagebill to a top 6/7 prem team just through the sheer volume of actual real supporters buying real stuff. Ten years prior when we were deep in Rangers financial shadow we still had roughly the same turnover as Liverpool. Now Luton town gets double our turnover because an American insurance company buys ad space from a malaysian tv channel. Some clubs like Benfica, Ajax & Salzburg have managed to bridge part of the gulf thru consistent player sales profits, but we haven't.

All that said about structural disadvantages etc: our board still shat the bed royally with recruitment this year & thats 100% on them. And its beyomd frustrating because 4 of the 5 games were tight and there for the winning if we'd had the sort of quality that even we could've afforded. Thats certainly a group we could've finished 2nd or 3rd in if we had our shit together. Then salt in the wounds the board have gone and given themselves huge payrises last week at the agm...they're on the verge of getting fucking mailbombed

    RIP Shane :(

And proving that everything is Celtic-related, somehow: Ive just learned that Henry Kissenger was a member of the NYC celtic supporters club. For real, apparently.

I didn't even know there was an NYC Celtic supporter club until just now. I'll be damned!

In NYC, it's more acceptable to support Glasgow Celtic than the Boston Celtics, that's for sure.

Yeah there are CSCs in every city ive ever visited honestly - my brother was in one in vietnam last year. A few in nyc, ones based in Dempseys in midtown, McHales around Hells kitchen & The parlour on upper west side, which was the one we went to.

The first one that popped up on Google was McHales.

    How was The Parlour?

Shane MacGowan did well. The BBC have had an obituary in their system for him since 2006.

Celtic have "You'll Never Walk Alone" along with Liverpool FC & "Grand Old Team" along with Everton.

Interesting. Who nicked it from whom?

I've heard both, the consensus online is that Liverpool sung it first but I'm sure Hut would disagree. Love it though either way.

I think ynwa is a a close enough run thing that theres some argument about it, its mid 60s either way. One account ive heard online was that liverpool sang it a few months earlier in 1966 then celtic fans adopted it after going to anfield in the winners cup semi final. But that game ended in a riot so ive always thought that story a bit weird! With grand old team im pretty sure that just goes back to Glen Daly's The Celtic Song recording in 1961 but there might be everton history with the tune i don't know

Everton play that at the end of every match win, lose or draw at Goodison. We come on to the pitch to Z Cars which Watford also uses as their entrance. I don't really know the story on why both use it.

It's a great football song to be fair. I love QPR with every fibre of my being but Pigbag (as great as it is) just doesn't compete.

That's actually quite interesting. You really couldn't get more disparate clubs, in terms of location and history, you have to wonder whether it is purely down to a fondness for the television show :Jest:

Yeah ok. Iirc they had lots of cool paintings inc one of Shane Macgowan as you came in & there was celtic stuff on the wall etc. A dart board which seemed to be made out of f'n kevlar right next to the bar which made the staffs lives a bit exciting. Otherwise a bit characterless, tbh... more 20 year old pine than 120 year old oak. Celtic lost, we got offered coke in the toilet at 11am, not much good happened after that...ended up in a honkytonk dive bar way over in brooklyn heights somehow then my phone died and i got proper turned around. I sobered up enough to realise i was lost when i passed the barclay Centre again after an hour of walking. That part of brooklyns a bit like east london in that the standard pisshead-on-tour navigation tactic of orientating yourself by the river will really fuck you up, its north then its west then its north then you're passing the barclay Centre again
