Good penalties. Maybe there's method in Southgate playing for draws

Indeed. I also think Pickford did a better job than Sommer who was never close.

Southgate masterclass again. Go a goal down, make subs, immediately equalise, bring on your best penalty takers, despatch them with ease. Genius.

And we all know what the narrative would have been if Switzerland won the shootout. Bad luck in the "lottery".

It's not a lottery and this is just one example. England took better penalties and Pickford made himself more of a presence. They were not in any means impressive but they deserve to go through.

There is clearly a skill behind taking a penalty. Agreed that it's not a lottery.

If a keeper saves your pen, you give the keeper credit. The penalty taker's penalty wasn't good enough.

Aye, hate all that 'lottery' shite. Scoring a penalty is a skill. So it's saving them. Failing to do either is through a lack of skill and, in a shootout, a lack of bottle, too.

It's literally kicking a ball into a net or trying to prevent it. They don't settle it via some subjective matter let alone one that doesn't have to do with football.

Honestly, and I mean this, I genuinely was not that concerned about the shootout. Palmer, Toney and Saka (despite the miss in the last final) are all proven specialists in the shootout, and Pickford has made more saves in shootouts than any England keeper ever. He just seems to thrive in that situation.
