I think and Irishman should have taken the job. You do well, take the credit. If you do poorly claim you did it deliberately as an IRA sabotage job. Win win!

I think Carsleys gonna get the permanent gig as part of a dastardly plan to cut Ireland off from 2nd and 3rd rate England players with Irish roots.

Sellik wrap up the Adam Idah deal. Which in the circumstances i guess counts as good news.

But the circumstances seem to be, based on every single transfer rumour surfacing, that our whole scouting operation is 'guys brendan has seen play in ingerland'.

So you pay almost ten million for a (servicable) mediocrity like Idah.

I see numpties comparing it to the Sutton transfer! Fools, thatd be like if we'd just got Rashford or Ivan Toney in. Idah is us back to the Wayne Biggens, Andy Payton market of the late Kelly/Lou Macari days - english second tier journeymen.

That market just costs £10m now but its the same market. Well, i guess its actually a stronger market now, but still. Kyogo was 3 times the player at a third the price.

Scouting man, we don't haz it

Did you fire the guy who signed Van Dijk?

Also agreed on the Chris Sutton bit....Idah played for Norwich. A relegated Norwich.

The much maligned Neil Lennon was heavily involved in recruitment at that point, probably one of his picks. He had a bunch of belters

But thats sheer fluke. You need an actual robust data driven system like a brighton, a red bull club, alkmaar etc for systematizing finds like that. A team of annonymous nerds pouring over spreadsheets. Alas we got shit - we've got managers picking out lads they've seen live like its 1997. Just go full hog and have Brendan do the accounts & run the ticket office like Willie Malley.

I remember when Fenway arrived at Liverpool the usual suspects me included (Sky, Talk sport etc) thought it was all bullshit ..."are they signing Brad Pitt too " .....truth of the matter is that football has changed.

Like I said before it's gone like boxing has always been....a guy like Marciano should never get close to Walcott but it's an attritional thing. Disparity in pure talent declines over the course of an attritional encounter and over the course of a season, the lifespan of individual athletes, etc.

By the 13th round of a 39 year old fighters career, Marciano was in position to close the show.

By the 23rd game of a rough season, you need donkeys as the racehorses of August and September start to feel the pace.

A guy like Kuyt should not be on the same field as Lionel Messi or Puyol.....but he can run them to death and still be up the far end causing havoc to actual effect after 70 minutes.

It's a maligned thing "pah, numbers, computers, I've shit em" but it's real, especially when combined with certain physical realities.
