Good lad is Paul. I lived in Scarborough when he was in his pomp and he was a proper local hero. He had a pub in the town centre with all his boxing stuff on the walls. It was brilliant. He was always in as well, pulling pints and generally chatting away to punters. A shame what happened to him. He's opened another pub in Scarborough last year. I popped in over the summer and he was in, pulling pints.

Scarborough is where working men went on holiday.

It will be turned into an exclusive spa town in due course.

Get in while you still can.

Only think I don't like about North Yorkshire is that North Sea. Fucking terrifying body of water.

He's done well all things considered. That could have gone a lot lot worse. Pre Watson guys like that didn't make it. The improvements in trauma-medicine have been immense as have the processes at ringside..

The seafront is great, but expensive. The town centre is a proper run-down shithole, but a cracking place to drink. You'll get a pint for £3 in loads of places full of hostile racists with no teeth. I love it lol

Honestly, it won't. What is very odd about Scarborough is that it is two resorts in one. The South Bay is chav central. Skegness for the north. It's always rammed with punters hoying 2ps into arcade pushers and shovelling donuts (sic) into their fat holes after a few Fosters in a kareoke bar. The North Bay is a middle-class retreat. Luxury apartments looking out to sea, no arcades, expensive 'bistro-pubs', a golf course etc...

It's been deliberately done - an attempt to attract both crowds. It's weird, but it works. Can't see any reason why they'll change it, frankly.

I spoke to him when I was in his pub earlier this year and he seemed pretty low. Medically he's recovered well, but there's definitely something missing for him. Felt for the bloke tbh.

Looks like that would come in handy if ever some nutter started on you at the pub.

But that sounds like it saves you a heap of money. Especially considering the cost of cigarettes and tobacco these days.

There is a bar in Scarborough called The Golden Last. It's a Rangers bar lol Genuinely the most edgy boozer in existence. Violence hangs in the air every second of every day.

£2.90 a pint, all day. Great place.

Feebs, do you still play pool when you get the chance? I've been playing more this year compared to last year. Rediscovered some old form recently. Felt good. I don't mind losing nowadays. I used to absolutely hate it when I was younger. Sulk and everything lol

Aye, I play in the Washington Sunday league for my local boozer's team. I'm not as good as I was when I played all the time, but still competitive enough and I enjoy it as an interruption to my pints lol The standard up here is really good - Mark Farnsworth owns the local pool hall and there's always daft lads playing cash games for thousands of quid.

Nice. I've never been tempted to play for money. I probably would have won a fair bit in my local pubs if anyone offered me a cash game, but for me it's always been about the love and enjoyment of the game. It's all a bit of fun at the end of the day. I know lads here too who play for ridiculous amounts of money. Maybe I'd play for a pint. That's as far as I'll go. I'm joining a league in February. Tuesday nights. Looking forward to it. Haven't played league pool in roughly 3-4 years now.

Aye, I'm the same. I enjoy pool but don't think I'd feel the same if I had a ton of cash riding on it. It's a hobby, not a job. Glad you're getting back into it. Playing for a team is good, more for the craic in the bar, rather than the pool itself, imo.

Yeah I agree. You can't beat the banter. I left a previous league as there were too many blokes who took it wayyy too seriously. Arguments then occurred. You win some, you lose some, and if you can't handle a loss then you need to grow up.

Hardly surprising. He was on the verge of a Naz rematch and absolutely life-changing munneh. Instead, he just got the life-changing bit.

On ppv, with the narrative that he "had Naz going in their first fight" , and as a fellow titlist, he'd have gotten £m for that fight. Probably £2m or more. Ppv fights then were about £20 and Naz was strictly ppv

I'm kind of curious. How much difference can there be between all of these places, especially in England. Aren't the majority using the same kinds of fish and basic recipe/technique? (batter, throw in the fryer etc)

Not all batter is the same and not all oils are either. Batter should be made fresh with yeast and a small bit of baking soda, chilled, then pushed through a food atomiser with a nitrous oxide propellant to aerate it and give it uniform texture.

The oil needs to be at a certain temperature as well as the batter. This way you get a very specific reaction where cold meets hot and you get great bubbles in the batter.

Modern bullshit outfits use groundnut oil because it lets them get more uses per fill. It's cost effective but it's not the best flavour.

I quite like the small tinned fish you can buy. Salmon, preferably. With tomato sauce. Nice mixed into pasta.

In the US, all ofhis fights were on HBO. His only PPV fight here was the one he lost.
