Very sad to hear. Hoping the Lone Star Cobra l gets all the help he needs. Boxing icon Donald Curry diagnosed with brain disease at 63... as his son makes heartbreaking plea for help | Daily Mail Online
Well, he's clearly not going to pull through. But definitely rooting for him to get the help he needs so that he can live out his final years taken care of. Brutal fucking sport this is. The problem with Curry, as a fighter, is that he was too dependent on his reflexes as defense. And once those reflexes started decline he caught a lot of punches flush. Similar to Ali, only Ali was a tougher man than Curry by about 10 light years. Roy it appears by the grace of God and a lot of luck has avoided CTE, despite all the damage he took once he became an old man. I wish the Cobra well. Sad to hear.
I watched Roy interview with Ward and he definitely sounded pretty good. I think the benefit Roy had is that a lot of the KOs he suffered were of the one punch variety. Curry is definitely damaged, though. And like X pointed out, he just seemed fragile in comparison to the real tough guys of the sport like your Alis, Leonards, etc. Plus, I imagine he probably did drugs for years.
Roy never had many 12 round wars. Critically he had no gym war bullshit either. That's what ruined Norris.
Curiously , Nigel Benn never sparred much but would up in a bad way nonetheless. So it's not a guarantee but it has detrimental effects for most guys who take it to excess. Of course, what constitutes excess differs from man to man. Ali definitely had brutal training camps AND hard fights. I've seen him sparring Holmes. You can hear those shots echo like cannons. Norris and Taylor the same. Gym wars. Bullshit. No need for it.
This is mad "He dominated Ali. That was not uncommon. Ali would go to the ropes and let guys pummell him" Ok.....
Southern drawl. He always dragged his words even as a young man. The first time I knowingly heard Jones speak was when he co commented on the Williams Vs Klitschko title fight. "He akshoooally pushed him daaaahn".
I think some guys just know only one gear. Just like in team sports some platers will shorten their careers by going overboard in pre-season games/practice.
Fine but just cut your training short and do it less often at same intensity.....body builders understand this with their recovery- periods etc. Like Lee Haney says "stimulate, don't annihilate". Dorian Yates would w/o 45 minutes and go home . Guys sparring 8,10 rounds a day for a month...mad shit.
Could be other angles to it for some though. Maybe if they feel if they don't go all out in the gym they'll get in trouble away from it.
Jones Jrs speech hasn't deteriorated to the level of toney or Meldrick taylor but he noticeably sounds worse
Gotta be hard to deal with if he starts swinging as he probably still has the muscle memory to throw good punches.
I was just listening to him the other day & thought he sounded fine. Sometimes it's hard to understand what he's saying but not much more than 30 years ago
It's just his southern drawl. It's easy to understand him if you're someone who has a lot of down south relatives, like I do, but for a UK listener like you, yeah I'm sure he's hard as fuck to understand. He's still extremely sharp of mind. Nothing at all like Mosley, Toney, Nando Vargas, Mel Taylor, etc.
Those 400 amateur fights surely didn’t do Curry much good. I thought he sounded clear, I was happy to see it
